Hey Folks,

I just joined the forum because of all the great .45 reloading info on this site. I have no idea why I have not found it before this. I feel like I missed something.

So my buddy stops by today w/ his old 1911 that he won't let me customize because he thinks it might be worth something.

Its a U.S. Govt. 1911 SN #176899.. is this pre WWII? BTW its a Colt...

Thanks in advance, and...

Warmest Regards,

That would seem to be WW I vintage.

By the serial number, it's a 1917, he's smart for not having it customized.

What do you reckon its worth? The finish is pretty poor...

Pictures would be helpful, as well as a description of any stamped markings on the frame, slide and barrel.

Make the pictures as clear as posible of the markings. There are some gentleman here who can tell you all about it.

Serial Number 176899 was shipped on Aug. 31, 1917 to the Commanding Officer, Springfield Armory, Springfield, MA in a 1000 pistol shipment. Pictures would be needed to give a more accurate assessment as to it's value, which will depend on how poor the condition you describe is and whether or not it is all original/correct for the period.
