Tough to figure out which forum to go to with this one, so I'm splitting the difference and adding a cross-post here.
While visiting a favorite local shop, I saw they had taken in a large number of Colts, mostly old shooter wheelguns. Good, for me- I'm a shooter and the only things I collect are fired brass and dust. And spousal ire, but that may not be too exclusive.
There was a "Double Diamond" set in the case, too, what looked like a Commander and long Python, both "pimped out" with a lots of shiny surfaces and some funny diamonds markings on them. They also came with a display case, I guess.
They wanted $3000 for this set... Is that a lot, or am I seeing something special here?

No, 3000 isn't bad at all if one is that type of Colt collector.....does the set have everything that came with it from the factory?.....boxes, paperwork, etc. Larry and I saw a set for 1995 2 years ago.....definately collectible!

Well, I confess I didn't check too closely on the accessories. I was too busy fondling three New Services and a Police Positive or two.
I may get back there this week to see.
Thanks

Tell you the truth, I would rather get the 3 New Services and other things adding up to that 3000. Were those New Service original?.....I really like those alot!

Uhhhh... I forget. I mean, I don't know what you mean. I mean...
Now, where's that wheelbarrow?

Actually, one in .45 Colt was reblued, I think, but was so pretty I almost wrote it up. There were two 1917s, one that suited me just fine but the chamber throats looked a bit suspect. Price was okay, partly on account of the initials scratched in the sideplate.
Then there was the Police Positive .32-20...

Guys, if you do not mind, this is a forum for Colt 1911s. I don't see much relevance to 1911s in this discussion.

John-
The Colt Double Diamond set includes a smaller 1911, what looks like a Commander to me, as well as a Python.
Here's a photo I grabbed elsewhere. I don't think he'll mind.
I do apologize if I carried on too much about the other guns in the case.

FWIW...the 1911 is an Officers ACP.

I assure you, they're even shinier in person. I am told they are high-polish stainless.
It is certain that I must not be allowed to own this set. Heaven knows, I'd be at the range in a blink, getting them filthy, scratched, and worn out as quickly as possible.
I am missing the collector gene, that much I have learned.
I was hoping someone would come along and speak to the specifics of the 1911. The Python, I think I get.

Not only that, add the cost of the white gloves you need to wear when handling them!

Is that a round-top Officer's ACP?
Anyone know about when they were made?

These type of photos need to be included in the M1911 Archives.
The OACP Colts have been discontinued, right?

The sadest thing is that I ran across half of a set that was broken apart. I grabbed it anyway. I believe that both the Python and Officer were high polished nickel. Here is my half:

No doubt I'll never ever find the other half :(

I believe they are stainless with the Ultimate Finish.

From their introduction until at least 1990. Larry or Paul will have the dates I'm sure.

I have an old one from 1985 (not stainless though ;))

Flame Red,
I'm afraid I would have done the same as you if I ran across the poor little orphan.
OUTSTANDING!

The Double Diamond Set was produced by the Custom Shop and was not commissioned by a distributor, in 1986 only. 1000 sets were produced. Python and Officers are both in Ultimate stainless and came with smooth rosewood stocks in a presentation case. Serial numbers match on both pieces. Also I believe the Officers ACP was produced in a variety of finishes from 85 to 97.

Maybe a stupid question;but I was wondering how come Colt discontinued the Officer's ACP? Did I miss the stickie?
Yup,the OACP is my personal fave(Gold Cups are right up there too).
