i am a fairly new collector with a small collection. i currently have the following and would like to add another 5 or 6 in the near future.
barretta 9000s 40 ,sig 229 40 w/crimson grip, hk p7m8 9mm colt all american 2000 9mm, gold cup trophy , and 2 scg 45s in hard chrome that are seq numbered guns that im a little hesitant to shoot. my thoughts where another scg in two tone, another gct in blue finish, maybe a commander , a smith&wesson 945 and a sig x5 competion.primary use of new guns will be target paper and plates (pardon the pun). so open to ideas from alot off people with much more knowledge than myself thanks for the help

It strikes me that, since you seem to be intending to actually shoot the new pistols, your purpose isn't collecting in the strictest sense. Therefore, I don't think you need to be concerned with "filling out" any gaps in your fledgling collection. Just decide what you want to shoot, and proceed accordingly.

Well, I would buy a Commander for sure, you need a Commander! Perhaps 2 Commanders! I saw a pristine 9mm commander at a gunshow last week that I passed up but I'm currently looking for the dealer to make him an offer. I have a Lightweight XSE and a SS NRM that I bought new, both are wonderful guns. And I have A blued ORM and a nickel Combat Commander from 1973. They're both great guns too. The tattoo you see as my avatar is a "loose" copy of the ORM I own. You can't go too far wrong with any Colt but I think you need a Commander!! :)

I believe as long as you stick with the Colts you will be in good shape. I do agree a collection is not complete without a Commander and I favor the blued Gold Cup Trophy.

A Gold Cup or SCG would be a good choice. Any Colt would be a great idea.

i have to say after picking up a defender today.that there is such a difference when you look at other guns such as springfield, kimber ultra ect. the colt is just so much more substantial and you can feel the quality just by dry firing even. sloppy trigers slides ect. the defender is the mini me of all of there great 1911 guns i will say that the mags take a hard shove to lock in . dont know if that is common?

The nice thing about this hobby is that in the future you will probably have a lot more guns and still lay in bed at night and wonder what to get next. For me any older Colt that is in good shape and original for a good price is worth it. Any new Colt that looks like it is put together well (Most of them now.) is worth it.

I noticed that inserting the magazine on a 1911 is different than say another model of auto pistol. They seem to require a little more force to seat the magazine home. This might change with use, but mine are all still quite new. So for now, they need to be inserted firmly.

when you say non 1911. are you saying standard 5inch or that the three inch versions are that much diff to seat.or are you saying non 1911s in general? because on my sigs, hks and others no issue at all.
thanks

Tupperware seems easier and my 69 series S&W is easier also. The 1911 just needs a bit more push. Like I said, maybe because mine are all fairly new.

dave, all: ALL my 1911s, Springers, RIA, Colts, including First Lady, my 1911 from 1918--and she's sure not NEW--require you to firmly (I call it "slapping" or "slamming") shove the mags into the magwell to engage them and allow loading from the slide racking. My Springer Mil-Spec's been shot more than any of mine, and she still needs that "smack" on the bottom of the mag to seat it. So do my others.
I think this is just because they're orginally military guns: they don't have that magazine out/no fire feature, and they need that "smack on the bottom". Like an M14 or M16 or M4. Positive seating of the magazine. None of mine, RIA, Springers, Colts, can you just "gently slide" the magazine in to full seat. That's with Colt, Wilson Combat, Novaks, Springer, USGI mags. Actually, my P90 and Taurus PT92AF also seat better with a good palm smack on the magazine bottom. Do that, never a problem with feeding.
Just my thinking here, from my experience. Slide it in, and smack it home.
