Can anyone give me an idea of what general off the bench accuracy can be expected from the current steel framed Commanders??

A representative target from the initial outing with my NRM commander. WWB 230gr FMJ, 21' fired standing/unsupported/two handed as quickly as I could acquire the sights

I sent the top end off to have a match bushing fitted and have the extractor tuned. Slide is on its way back (should be here Monday) and I'll post an updated target.

Poohgyrr,
Target engaged at 25 yards off a two-handed, bench-rested and padded hold. Gun is a Colt's Commander, Model 04091U. The three "flyers" were the result of a change in ammo, from 230 gr. Federal American Eagle, to Hornady 200 gr. +P TAP FPD rounds.

Target engaged with same pistol at a range of 21 feet. Modified Weaver stance. One hundred rounds of Wally World Winchester, 230 gr. FMJ.

My other two Commanders are capable of this kind of accuracy. Unfortunately, their owner is not quite as reliable. ;)

This is 7 rounds, approximately 21' from a rest.

I would say that they shoot pretty good!

I haven't met any factory pistol which the shooter could outrun, in other words, the weak link in the accuracy dept is not the gun but the shooter.

Agreed. Some like to point the finger at the gun when the human element is the main variable.

I'm still looking at Commanders for my next 1911 (looking is half of the fun). The newer XSE is nice and I wouldn't refuse one, but I like the looks of the older model. Then if it's needed, add a little tuning to cleanup any rough spots. And go shoot lots of ammo.
I haven't shot a Colt for a long, long time. and appreciate you guys sharing yours.
And it is the shooter, absolutely. I always remember shooting .22 rifles and .410 shotguns as a kid. Then I bought a Star PD, and was surprised when my first three magazines missed the entire target (the NRA 25 yard slow fire) at 50 feet. I figured that must be a hint. I asked an old PPC shooter for help and started shooting 100 to 200 rounds of ball every week. After a while I became better. ;) Unfortunately, the Star PD couldn't take that much full power ammo and I no longer have it. This also helped me decide to buy quality firearms...

Twenty five-yard groups, hand held modified weaver stance with my handloads. The orange dots are 4” in diameter, you tell me if it’s a shooter.

Here are pictures of two targets I shot today with a pre 80 colt combat commander 9 mm and another at 45 cal at 10 yds, two hands and fast firing, 10 rounds. I am new on both guns, the 45 cal is still breaking in, a series 80, bought three weeks ago and the 9 mm is born in 1973 bought used in January. As you can see my trigger squeeze on the 45 still needs adjustments. (After shooting 100 each on the 1911, when I tried my H&K USP I noticed the first magazine 12 rounds were also at 7 oclock.) I love the handling of the 9 mm. http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p150/tonyniev/april06lasvegas045.jpg

accuracy update!
my slide has returned from the smith - had an Ed Brown bushing tightly fitted. I'm pretty happy with the outcome:

WWB 230gr FMJ from 45' fired two handed, unsupported; five shot group measures 1.18"

Lindermant, a great improvement in accuracy with the new Brown barrel bushing. Any special reason you selected the Brown bushing over other manufacturers bushings?

I have a 2006 Combat Commander XSE. It's very accurate (sorry no target pics) - much more so than the owner. Interestingly, it's seems to shoot better after ~1500 rounds and after I replaced full length guide rod with normal one. Of course, it could be that I got better with it after ~1500 rounds...

no special reason, rather the recommendation of the smith that did the work.
