Hi guys. First, I’d like to thank everyone for the wonderful information on this forum. A lot of my questions were answered simply by searching. Also, thanks to everyone that responded to my threads and PMs.

Here’s the story behind the gun. My dad bought it new at a local shop for around $300 years ago. It sat in his safe for I don’t know how many years and he said he had never even fired it! Just bought it and put in the safe!

This started out as a factory stock RIA GI Model. It shot just fine but I wanted to make it better. Understand, none of these modifications were necessary; I’m just the kind of guy that puts a Cold Air Intake on the engine of his 4-door car. I love improving things but I’m always very tasteful in how I do it. I care about function, not flash.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the gun:

Changes: (Almost all these prices include the shipping charges.)

Alumagrips – slimline, full checkering, selected the magwell option with no lower bevel so it would come down flat and cover the MSH Pin. Much cleaner look IMO. Installed the thin bushings and blued screws, used the bushing bit and blue locktite on the bushings. Chris was very helpful with this order. Nice guy. [$77.50]

Put black stateboard tape over the frontstrap. [$7]

2 Colt Factory 7 round magazines, Wolff springs added. [$75.21]

Added a 16# Wolff recoil spring. [$4]

Added a Greider Medium LOP trigger and fitted. Polished internal guiderails and trigger rails. I also polished the trigger to give it a smoother and more metallic appearance to match the barrel. Set overtravel screw. [$16.50]

Added a Cylinder & Slide 4.5 lb 5-piece matched trigger assembly. Disconnector, sear, hammer, sear spring, main spring. Didn’t need to touch any of this stuff, all came mirror polished. I had to polish my factory sear/disconnector PIN a little with 2000 grit wet/dry paper to get the sear to rotate freely, just basically knocked the black off the center of the factory pin where it was too big for the sear hole. [$125.75]

Added a Cylinder & Slide hammer strut and hammer strut pin because the RIA strut/hammer/pin were staked together and the pin couldn’t simply be punched out to reuse the strut. [$22.95]

Filed down the grip safety to accommodate the new hammer. Cold Blued the top.

Fitted an EMG oversized firing pin stop and cold blued it. [$15 + $6]

Installed an EMG recoil spring plug (guiderod hole model). [$15]

Filed down a corner of the inside of the thumb safety so that it would engage with the new internals.

Polished barrel, inside of slide, rails, contact points, etc with 2000 grit wet/dry paper, not enough to knock off the finish, just enough the feel smooth to the touch. Inside of slide is still black.

Polished the frame ramp and throat of barrel with 2000 grit wet/dry paper. Again, not to a mirror finish, just smooth to the touch.

Removed extractor and radiused/polished it using 2000 grit wet/dry paper.

Cold blued the tips of the pins, etc where the finish had worn off due to lots of disassembly. Also cold blued the plunger tips where they were getting shiny.

Did a complete safety test and everything passed. Did the hammer follow test with 2 rounds in the mag, passed fine. No hammer follow. 150 hardball rounds, no failures.

Gun feels and shoots great. I haven’t measured the trigger pull yet.

Total comes to about $660 with all individual shipping included, give or take $10. Wonder what a gunsmith would have charged for labor? Any comments welcomed.

Very interesting! :)
What have you got planned for the rear sight?

I'm still very undecided. Just started asking for recommendations:

I dunno if this silence is a good thing or a bad thing. Is this a case of, "If you can't say anything nice...."?

I like it a lot ;) Looks like you took the time to do just what you wanted. I think it is coming out great. Keep up the good work ;)

Nice job! I like the innovative use of skateboard tape....hey, if it gets the job done, go for it!

Looks good! Any reason you didn't install a beavertail? It seems to be a popular upgrade for the GI units. I really like how you broke down every modification with prices and a brief description! It is very helpful for gun novices like myself.

Yes but it's just aesthetic reasons: I don't like how beavertails look. They're curvy while the 1911 has very clean lines. The 1911 is a "fast" looking gun, it moves forward very well and the beavertail is like this horn pointing in the wrong direction.

I also think that the cocked and locked hammer hanging out suspended in air looks a little scarier, too :)

I put an LAP/PSI (LPA is the manufacturer, PSI is the importer) low profile adjustable rear sight on this gun. I'll get some pictures up this weekend if I can. My brother has my camera at work.

I've put about 200 rounds through the gun since I modified it. No failures of any kind. FMJ and JHP.

I took the gun into a shop today and had them test the trigger. He said it was a hair under 3lbs. I might get a second opinion :)

Here are the pics. I painted over the sight's white markings with a Birchwood Casey Super Black Touchup Pen. You can still see them enough to make adjustments but they are no longer distracting.

Thanks!

I went to a shop the other day and snap-capped a RIA Gi and a Springfield Armory. The RIA had a better trigger than the Springfield and both guns felt terrible compared to mine. I wasn't sure before because I had nothing to compare it to, but now I'm sure...mine has a glass rod trigger. Those two guns taught me what creep is :).

This Greider trigger and Cylinder&Slide parts are great!

Did that gun come with the commander hammer and standard grip safety? How well do they work together?

I've been thinking of getting a beavertail and commander hammer for my Rock, but I'm like you. I prefer the look of the standard grip safety. I also prefer the look of the spur hammer, but it bites me occasionally. I may just bob the thing.

It came with the spur hammer. I had to stone down the top of the grip safety so that the new commander hammer would clear. I just gave it a sharper slope towards the rear.

If the bite is all that bothers you and you aren't going to replace the sear and disconnect along with the hammer, I'd just bob the spur hammer too.

How do you like the new sights? Isee you left the GI front sight on. does it work ok? does the new rear sight stick up higher than the GI? Does it snag on your shirt when you carry? where did you get them ? where you able to D.I.Y.? I need to change mine, I cant see very good any more old age you is getting me!

Well, I can't comment on long-term durability yet but I really do like the sight. Yes, this particular low profile model is lower than some adjustable rear sights and is designed to work with the factory front sight.

It looks like 3.5-4.0 mm tall measured from the top of the slide to the top of the sight. I removed my factory rear sight long ago and have lost it so I can't comment with a direct comparison of the two. Based on my memory, this adjustable sight is at most the same height as the factory GI sight and most likely shorter.

I haven't carried this gun yet...no CCW but I can tell you that the sight blade has rounded corners. I got them from the AJAX website in the link I posted a few posts up. Go to the other link if you want to see descriptions and pictures of all the models available but purchase from AJAX if they carry the model you want...they are cheaper.

Yes, I installed this rear sight. I opened up the rear dovetail a little with a flat ignition file. I would highly recommend using a triangular file so the angles stay the same. This rear sight also has a set screw and comes with an allen wrench to tighten it down.

I did a lot of hard hammering on this sight with a hammer and dulled nail while I was fitting it in and out. The sight is plenty tough.

I'll post some pics (later tonight if my brother brings my camera home) of the packaging so you can see exactly what I got and what the different codes are.

Notice that there are 3 sight blade options.
