I am currently considering the Defender as my next 1911 purchase. I have my eye on four:
1. Micro Compact
2. Defender
3. Para carry 12
4. Para Slim Hawg
I keep returning to the defender. Question....what does the Defender have on the front strap if you take off the Rubber Grips and want to go to wood?

Smooth; no checkering, etc.

Hmmmm. Can the front strap be replaced or checkering added?

You can always add checkering, but check out this option. This is a Pearce grip adaptor insert that you can use with wood grips. You get the grip you desire, it doesn't hang up on clothes, and you can put any grips with it you like. 44 Man.

Or you can always get some skateboard tape from your local toy store and be done with it. It won't cost you more than 2$ and it works just fine.

Bought a Defender about a year ago after much searching.
Everyone says 3 inchers are tempermental, but mine was perfect. Fed anything but my semi-wad reloads. Very accurate for barrel lengh. I used it once for steel plates at 20 yds and did fairly well.
Rubber grips make it too big, for me anyway. I just put some skate tape on the front srtap and got some Ahrends ebony grips.
I have a photo I can email you.

John, thanks for the idea of skateboard tape, I had forgotten about that one. Question though, will the tape stick to the coating on the Defender frame? I've thought of checking my frontstrap, but didn't want a two tone look to the frame. 44 Man.

Yes the skate board tape will stick on the gun, no problems there.
