Hi
I headed over to the toy store today to get one thing and wound up with something else. I was looking for an XSE, but it was already sold.
I almost didn't get anything. Hunter's Evil Twin was there talking about how Kimber makes the lowest cost "good" 1911's around. The comparison soon got to "Colts all cost over $2000 if they are any good". I kid you not those are direct quotes.
I simply had to head out to the parking lot for some fresh air. Nobody listening to him was buying anything. I figured it was better to simply walk away.
Once I got back here's what I found:

This picture needs a little work:
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n68/pa_guns/38superleft.jpg
The new one is a a little different from this one:
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n68/pa_guns/systema3.jpg
but the heritage is obvious.
The new pistol is a Model O in 38 Super. It's the first one I have ever tried out in 38. The pistol is *very* well put together. I'm not sure if this is some kind of special package, but I don't think so. It appears to be just a standard pistol.
Now I need to stock up on 38 ammo and probably get some dies. Out to the range we go ....

Nice Colt Bob. I think you did right getting the Colt and not taking my evil twins advice about the Kimber (if I ever catch up with him it will be me and him but mostly me :D ).
Might be time to look into handloading. The Super .38 is an excellent round but factory ammunition does not do it justice.

Bob, those are some nice pistols! I think I'd like to have a full size .38 Super to go with my Commander. And, I really like your Sistema! Looks like it is in pretty good shape--at least it appears to have more finish on it than my two!

Hi
The amazing thing about the whole "evil twin" thing was that not 5 feet away sat a pair of GCT's priced right at and just below $1K. I understand how people get hung up on their pistols, but this was a bit over the top. The world is full of crazy people ...
I have not done a lot with a 38 Super my self, but *know* they shoot very well. My grandmother (yes that's right) shot one darn well.
I'm probably going to set up the Dillon for 38 Super once I pile up enough brass. I scrounge brass at the local range, but 38 Super doesn't seem to show up much.
They are talking about six inches of snow tomorrow so it may be a while before I get to try it out. I only shoot outdoors. Though Hunters evil twin might have gotten me to reconsider that :D :D ....

My other two make up for this one in the finish department. I don't think either one has a single place on the outside with finish still in place ....
It's *very* hard to believe that the Colt could look like the Systema one day isn't it?

Hi
The one thing I need to work on a bit is the photo setup here. The grips on the pistol are a *lot* better looking that they come out in the picture. Colt really did a nice job on this one.
As far as I can tell the pistol was special ordered back a while ago and never picked up. His loss was my gain.
I sure hope they don't catch on to the other $1250 I owe them any time soon ....

Bob
Since you apparently thought the .38 Super was worth having, may we inquire as to how much over $2000 it cost? :D
The last pic is one of your Sistema projects? Is it just the photo, or is that thing missing the front sight blade entirely?
pa_guns
12th February 2007, 18:22
Hi
I still owe them another $1250 to make up my "mandatory" $2000 on the 38.
The Systema picture is a bit deceptive. The pistol does have a front sight blade. It's still got some blue on it so it fades into the background. The other thing not fully apparent in the picture is that it only has half of an extractor.
I'm still trying to decide which of the three Systema's to start out on. The first one probably will not be the one that comes out the best.
Maybe I should convert one to 38 ....

Nice Super Bob! I bought one just like it a few months ago. I bought a case of this ammo when it was only $139. http://www.the-armory.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/38_Super_FMJ_Aguila.html Works pretty good for plinking. The object is to save the brass and get some dies when I have enough brass to load up. Problem is, it's been too darm cold in northern PA to get outsie an shoot. Another problem I have is finding the brass. The guns sees to throw it in just about every direction.....including staright at my forehead! Thank God I wear glasses!

Hi
If a 1911 is throwing brass all over the place then I would guess that there's a problem. Extractor issues come to mind.
I'm off looking for brass my self. So far I have some Winchester at $12 for a box of 50. Gotta get some dies as well.

I'm sure it's probably extractor issues. I tweaked it a little the last time I had it apart for cleaning, but haven't had it out since. It will end up customized at some point anyway, so whatever the cause will be worked out in the end. The 38 Super is a fun cartridge to shoot.

Hi
The extractor problem may be something as simple as a burr on the "claw". It's at least looking at it next time you tear the pistol down.
Looks like I should hop in the car and grab all of the $12 a box Winchester I can find. Even with dealer discount I can't find it that cheap at anybody who has it in stock.

I don't know if it's my Colt, the round, or both... but with all due respect to the "old timers", I feel the .38 Super is every bit as effective (or more so) than that lately "beloved" 9mm (and I DO have a 9mm): it's the same .38 caliber, maybe a little slower or faster depending, and that Colt's I've got is dead on the money at 25 YDs out of the box: first, I mean the very first, firing, even though I was having seeing problems due to my glasses, it put at least 5 of 8 rounds in a group about 1-1/2" wide, prob 1" tall. I'd already shot some .45 at the target, but I was specifically aiming at that spot, and I know at least five of the eight hit there from the edges of the hole. It was quite a hole, actually... Had it been defensive, I reckon 5-8 .38s hitting central mass at about 1450 fps would be more effective than throwing the pistol at the target... and I sure wouldn't want them to pick my .38 Super up, if they halfway know how to shoot, and turn it on ME after I threw it at them!!! Hah!!! If those ol' boys want to berate the .38 Super, they better include the 9mm, .38 Special, .357 Mag, and .38 Auto. YES: I MUCHLY prefer .45 ACP. But I also think in certain situations, my 9mm, .38 Special/.357 Mag, and .38 Super are effective. Don't carry them much, and don't shoot them much, but do respect them. I just don't think a 38 caliber/9mm bullet size is effective for a MILITARY sidearm, nothing like the venerable ol' .45. Mag capacity be danged: 1-shot stop to 3-4-shot stop, makes up for world of capacity. Our .223/5.56mm rifles aren't standard to the "world", anymore than the .45 pistol was, unless it's Britian or someone we're arming; mostly our enemies use .30 cal (7.62x39mm, as you know). You aren't going to pick up rifle ammo on the field of battle from enemies for your M4, that's for sure. So, in my addled mind, I don't buy the "universal" 9mm package in re: the military switching. SEALs, Spec Ops, some others are known to carry .45s in many situations. Far as controlability for draftee or volunteer non-shooters, seems to me the 9 kicks back harder than a .45, although the .45 climbs and canters off to the right more than my 9mm.
BUT... I love my .38 Super Colt 1911A1. It is SWEET, VERY flat trajectory, regardless of my own preferences, or the opinions of others. 100% reliable so far, too. I'm sure not sorry I bought it.

My .38 of course is ss. My USGI 1911, black army. But, my 01991A1, Colt's blued. So far, seems REALLY solid, and it's very attractive, seems durable. Next few months, I'll be finding out if she's reliable on the range. She may become my primary gun, and then I'll have to name her.

I know Park from my Mil-Spec Springer (sold) and the two RIA's I've bought (one mine, the other gifted to my dad). In fact, the sticker on its case says, "MODEL O1991 GOVT MODEL 45 ACP 5" BARREL BLUE FINISH". It's NOT Parked. And as you said, the blue is VERY fine! I'm impressed. It's every bit as good as my GP100, my Taurus PT92AF, or my Mossberg 500.
The Park on my dad's and my RIAs, is "grainy"; the Park on my Mil-Spec Springer was also, although the commercial finish Parks, very, very subtle diff compared to bluing. It absorbs oil, as you know from your long experience. My new Colt's doesn't. Obviously, due to its blued vs Parked nature. It IS a 1991, obviously. It's wiped down, but when it had excess on it, it didn't absorb, it only made it greasy/oily. My Parked used to eat up that oiling. Now it's conditioned, and not so bad. I got my dad's conditioned, as well. It's still doing pretty good, although I may have it refinished in Birdsong before I have mine done. Easier for him to clean/maintain. He's sharp, healthy but 87 years old, even though he's a dead on shot with a rifle or pistol.
But, all Colt's are good. Hee hee, me and my work bud handling my O1991 yesterday... he's the one who let me take his Mark IV Govt Model home two years ago, and got me HOOKED on the platform.
Love the Colt's bluing. Glad and thankful I got this one.

Hi
From what I can see the Colt polish and blue process is pretty consistent across the product lines. The claim is made that the polish compounds used have not changed in over 100 years. There have been changes over the years, but that's over a *lot* of years. .

Speaking of critters, a woman dropped off a pit bull that was in terrible shape last night. She found the dog on the street. This poor beast was skin and bones, he almost looked as if his head was too large for his body, he was so scrawny. He got right in the cage once he realized there was food in there for him. How could anyone neglect an animal that is in your care like that? It's just criminal.

You can use up most of the cats 9 lives with one well placed shot from a 1911! :D
Dave, are you a veterinarian? Here, all this time I was thinking you were carnivorous just like me! :)

That stuff drives me nuts  !!! It gives me ideas for another use of my of 1911's... although the owner should really get the same as what their critter had to endure...
Hope that pooch can get a good home. My current German Shep is a rescued neglect and abuse case. He's turned into a really great boy. Sorry about swerving the thread momentarily...

Yea , I have to agree, But when people can't even treat each other with decency or respect that doesn't leave much for our pets..... :o

Hi
I guess I shouldn't be surprised at how many of us are pet people, but I am.

Hi
Two large dogs and several cats on the other side of the fence in the back yard. They like to go out and stare at each other through the bars ....

I really like pan seared steaks, strips, porterhouse and ribeyes! I buy some from Allen Brothers in Chicago once in a while, they are very expensive USDA Prime. They are what places like Gibson's (in Chicago) sell to you when you visit them for a nice red meat dinner. Mostly I buy them as Christmas presents for very picky friends and family.
Nope, not a vet. We have an animal cage in the back by the garage for stray and abandoned animals. We call Animal Control and they stop by and fetch them. Occasionally one of us will bring the critters home at the end of our shift.

Know how you feel my friend. As for my wife and I: Two pitt mixes (both resue cases) ,two cats, horse, and a monitor lizzard. Like Jeff, there is always something going on. On another note I ran into an evil Kimber pusher today. Came over to where I was looking at my SCG and Gunsite CCO and said "Kimber makes the best affordable 1911." I said " Really, I'm selling mine to a friend to get another Colt." "Colt is where it's at" I told him. Then I showed him my target Colt sends with the SCG.
