So how, exactly, does a "1911 Auto Hood Length Gauge" (http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=20355&title=1911+AUTO+HOOD+LENGTH+GAUGE) work?

The reason I ask is, I've recently gotten back into school and got into the machine tool program at my local community college. I have a class in which some of the projects we do are linked to another class that I'm not taking (the other guys in my class are, I'm the only one going part time.) This leads to me doing "special projects" so that I can run the same machines without having to be in the other class. Now I've got to come up with a part to make on the wire EDM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_discharge_machining). I immediately think of tools that I don't have when I get to make whatever part I want, so I figured this would be a good one. It's either this or a barrel bushing wrench.

So, what do you think?

I don't use one.......I use a .001-.003" shim between the breech face and the end of the hood to get my measurement.

But, do you know how it's used? It says it's set up to measure 1.313, 1.315, 1.318 and 1.321. Is that the measurement from the corners of the tool to the point where the "ends" stop and the tool gets more narrow? I need to figure out how it is used so that I can make an accurate tool.

Thanks,

It just as 4 diff lengths to measure from the locking lugs to the breech face . Then after you measure you use a Mill or lathe to trim the hood close then do the final fit by hand . It would be good to have if you plan on fitting allot of bbls

WAIT!! The face to hood should run from zero (target master) to three (real world) thousands of an inch. HOWEVER, do not forget that the distance from the ridge that stops the cartridge to the breach face is prime.

No joke.
