View Full Version : barrel and slide locked together?? Link problem?

Got my slide back from Novak's with the new sights on it yeastday and put the gun together and went to the range to sight it in. About the 12th shot the slide didn't go all the way forward so I gave it a little push with my thumb and it closed right up....that is odd it thought...better check the bullet.

Well the slide would not come back more than about 1/4 inch. Pushed the slide back and forth many times trying to get it freed up to no avail. Ended up disassembling the gun except for the slide of course and could see the cartridge was not stuck in the barrel. So I thought the only thing left was that the link was broken. I ended up tapping on the down barrel while my buddy pulled back on the slide.....after a few taps the barrel and slide let loose and the bullet came out.

I didn't see any broken parts or anything that would have caused the problem. No I haven't shot it since.

Any ideas???

I find that type of thing happens with tight chambers. Especially if you use lead with reloads. The chamber gets dirty, and things get tighter. The tell tale sign was when you had to push the slide into battery.

How long have you had the gun? How many rounds were put thru it before you sent it off?

I had it about 5-6 years and it has a couple 1000 rounds thru it. I thought the bullet was jammed too initially but I could see it move thru the magwell when I took the gun apart.

Howdy guys,

Do a quick-check. With the gun empty, turn it upside down and rack the slide. If it locks up about a quarter-inch out of battery, it's probably short-linked.

Tuner,

I'll give it a shot tonight and let you know...Thanks as always.

sbgruen,

I had a similar problem after installing a super duty slide stop. The slide stop was not heat treated and the link bent the stop crosspin. I had a time getting the slide back and slide stop removed. The slide stop cross pin had a bow in it. The manufacturer replaced the slide stop with a properly heat treated one and I had no further problems.

Best regards,

sbgruen....Mighty welcome.

CJR....Wow! That's bad! Good that ya got it straightened out.

sbgruen...Another thought hit me as I logged off but had to scoot before i could get back on the thread.

If the bushing was tightly fitted, the armorer may not have allowed enough
clearance for barrel tiltdown. It happens more often than you might think.
Before you replace the link or send the gun back...beg, borrow or steal a standard bushing and try the gun to see if the barrel will unlock and tilt correctly. If you can't find one, check to see if your barrel will tilt down at the rear far enough for the bottom of the barrel to touch the inside of the bushing with the bushing about 1/10th inch rearward of the muzzle. if it will...go to the next check...

Lay the barrel in the frame bed with the slidestop crosspin through the link. Push the barrel down and back. Look to see if the barrel is in the bed or standing slightly off of it. More than about the thickness of a sheet of newspaper is too much, and you may have a LONG link that won't let the barrel fall into bed.

If both these check out...go back to the short link issue.

Luck!

Tuner,

missed your last post before I checked the link...turning the gun over had no effect. I check the new stuff tonight.

CJR - checked the Slide release too and it is still straight.

wichaka - Interesting enough it was a lead bullet that I tried ...I had been shooting plated before then.

Thanks guys for all the sugestions.

I'll see what happens at the range tomorrow.

Howdy John!

Nahhh...Been busy. My mother died the 22nd of January and I've been tryin' to get all her final business squared away. I'll be back in the thick of things
soon enough...I just hope I can stay ouitta trouble. :D

I had another forum member here Friday. New guy...Boneman. His GI Springfield had a little hitch in the getalong and we got it fixed up and had a nice visit afterward. We plan on hookin' up to go shoot soon.

Then yseterday, a couple guys from THR came to get a pair of Smith & Wesson revolvers tuned up, and I bought the single nicest Remington Rand
that I've ever seen. Lay it down beside a new GI Springer and you can't see the difference...until you look close. The gun is easily 99.9% and all correct...
likely original. I sat up half the night lookin' at it.

Cheers all!

Well I ran 100 rounds of plated bullets through it today and no problems. I did check all the other things you mentioned Tuner but it all looked ok.

I'll keep my fingers crossed and see if I get any more trouble with it.

Thanks again guys,

Scott

First of all, I am sorry to hear about your mother. Loosing such a close relative is sometimes unbearable. I wish you (and yours) live a long life to remember her.

As for your new toy Sir, TPIUWOP (this post is useless without pictures).
