Hi

I realize this is an odd subject for the "broken pistol" area, but thought I'd give it a try. :D

A couple of Systema's seem to have showed up here recently. Oddly enough they *both* seem to need a re-finishing job. I intend to use this as excuse for setting up a small hot blue setup. The setup will be strictly pistol only. No barreled rifle actions or shotguns.

I've done bluing before, but it was on another guy's setup and under his watchful eye. I do realize that this is not a simple process and that the stuff you use is a bit dangerous. I also realize that a bottle of somebody's cold blue would work *almost* as well. I like hot blue ....

I'm looking for equipment recommendations. I'm guessing that I need either a quarter size or half size iron tank from Brownell's, a gas something to heat it with and some chemicals. My recollection is that the wash / rinse / clean tanks all were pretty non-critical, provided the wife does not catch you stealing them. :D

So has anybody else been down this road before? I'm guessing that somebody has. What are the bumps in the road?

Thanks!!

Bob

Good luck..........if it were me I'd do rust blueing. Of course the result is different.
I've never done any hot blueing.

Hi

Oddly enough I was just reading a thread on another forum about that very subject. I forget who was in that one :D :D :D

I suppose I could also go with a Park finish. I just happen to like the way a good deep blue looks. It's also neat to have the setup for doing a lot of other small items around the house. Stuff like small tools last longer with a finish on them ...

Might I suggest that you call Brownells and talk to one of their tech lads about Dicropan IM. From what I read, it sounds like exactly what you need.

Hi

Its certainly a *lot* easier to set up than a true hot blue.

I guess I just have seen so many "almost but not quite" bluing systems that I'm not sure I'm up for another one .... :butthead: :butthead:

Does anybody out there have 5 or 10 years of experience with the Dicropan stuff? I guess that would be something that might help me get over my fixation ....
