View Full Version : Calling all FFLs -- Import Question(s)

I've become interested in getting my grubby mitts on an Imbel 1911 in .380ACP. Imbel is a Brazilian manufacturer. So far, I have not been able to find any indication that the brand is imported into the U.S., although Imbel makes components for Springfield Armory. Does anyone have any information on a U.S. importer for this brand?

Assuming that they do not have a U.S. importer, is there any legal way for a person to buy one copy of a gun and bring it (have it sent) into the U.S.? I'm willing to consider any possibility, including going to Brazil (my wife wants to go there anyway, Lord knows why) and ship it to myself at home. What about finding someone in Brazil to buy it from Imbel, then sell it to me. Can a private party from outside the U.S. sell me a handgun if it goes through my friendly local FFL?

Your friendly FFL holder can get a one time import form from the BATFE on their website. The form has to be submitted to the BATFE with all info on the firearm and approved before the shipment occurs. Do a "Google" search on Firearms importation.

Good Luck.

Thanks. I'll look forward to having a chat with my local gun shop owner. I was hoping there would be a way.

I assume this has to be a Class 1 FFL, not a C&R, correct? (The gun would be of new manufacture, not a 50-year old relic).

BATFE has conditions for all. Most military returning from overseas bases have to complete the form for any firearms they bring back. And they do not have FFL's (they are shipping to themselves). Old Timer's Disease has allowed the form number to escape me, but I believe the Form 9 is the one.
