I picked up a 1911 a couple of years back... and i think i've finally given up on trying to put together some of her history myself.
any info you guys can put up is greatly appreciated. (:dead_hors )
also appraisal would be neat (not going to sell, as it fits nice in the WW2 collection... just "to know")

ohh... yeah, forgot something, although the top of the slide is worn alot more than the rest of the gun... it appears to be from sitting in the holster for a thousand years.
the front bottom of the slide, and around the edges match tone... it's just the top raised area.
(if all that makes sense)

Very nice! Good looking Colt and good job with pictures too. Those M1 Carbines are getting popular.

That is a nice collection. I have been looking for an old m1911. Bottom line is I'm green to what is good and what is junk. i am just a rook. So out of couriosity why did you black out 2 of the serial numbers?

The M1916 holster you have pictured is a HOYT and would have been stamped just above the 1918 date....look at an angle and it may appear.
The 'S' mag of course is a WWII contract mag built by Scovill Mfg. Co.
The barrel you have pictured 'S P' is a Springfield Type 12 post WWI field replacement....the correct barrel for your M1911 would be a Colt Type 4 with a verticle 'H P' stamped on top of the barrel hood. The barrel you have in the gun, if it is proofed 'F P' on the lugs, is a WWII Flannery Bolt used primarily by RRand and Ithaca.
Certainly a nice looking grouping.

A.L.P. CO. also made holsters that were marked 1918 J.J.M., and were often unmarked.
The S P marked barrel was used in some 1916-17 Springfield Armory pistols and between the wars as replacements.
Your pistol is 1918 Colt production. All the Evansville ammo is corrosive and I would avoid shooting it unless you take the proper steps in cleaning the barrel afterwards. The WCC ammo will also be corrosive if it is Lot #6375 headstamped 11-52 or earlier.

just seemed like a good enough idea.

although i've seen the ammo sold pretty cheap (sportsmansguide had it in the spam container looking cases awhile back), i still won't shoot the ammo... looks far too good sitting beside everything.

the barrel in the gun (my shooter) is new... no way i'm hurting an old barrel to destroy paper.
anyone have a line on a barrel that would be the correct one?
the parts and pieces in the gun don't have any markings (that i've seen), should there be any?
thanks all, i'm quite proud of my little collection...
new to add to the m1 is a forward rail grouping, fancy thumbhole stock (eventually), and other toys to give my friends m4 a run... don't worry, not adding anything permanent!

Exit,
I agree, but weren't A.L.P.s stamped on the back of the holster.....??

anyone a genius with the 1903's (gotta try to match a bunch of stuff... and make things seems 'right')

That seems to be an unanswered question to be for certain. I have discussed this with Jack at Lee-Jackson Militaria before and he says that A.L.P. holsters have been noted with the marking on the front as well as S&R Co.. Personally I have not seen any of the S&R Co. holsters, nor heard of any with that marking myself.

Now you have..... it took me a while to find mine.....as I have just about 1 of everything....almost.

S & R was just a WWI leather goods contractor. According to all the experts, Meadows, Bender, Vanderlinden.... nobody knows who S & R were..... some wise guys think it was Sears and Roebuck.... but that isn't the case.
Additionally, from personal observances, I have never seen a S & R that has not been stamped on the back.... just as this example.

Nice example Bob, I should clarify my statement though, I meant an S&R with a 1918 J.J.M. stamp. I have seen the S&R holsters before but none with the 1918 J.J.M marking. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

How is it possible that J.J.M. inspected M1916s at Atchison Leather Products, Hoyt and S & R..... Am I incorrect, that inspectors worked in house....??? Or was this done after shipment to Ordnance...???
Personally, I have never seen '1918 J.J.M. ' on any other holster that a Hoyt.

I am certain that I've seen and may even have some pictures on one of my CDs, of an A.L.P. Co. holster with a 1918 J.J.M. stamp, I have not seen one (1918 J.J.M) on any of the S&R Co. holsters, the markings I have observed on those are JPC, RCH, ELT,TMU, and 1917 LNO. As for the Hoyt I have seen the 1918 J.J.M., some marked simply 1918, and most commonly HOYT 1918 J.C.Y.

Looks like you've got yourself a beauty there. exitwounds and bgiven, like Hunter, are way more expert about the original USGIs than I am; but, I am fortunate enough to have acquired one that is in great shape, perfectly functional, and authentic. She's a Colt's, mid- to late-1918 govt contract production.
You asking about the value and fun... I don't care too much about the value of First Lady, as she'll NEVER be sold. I got her for $945 at auction, which considering the authenticity (and I've checked her out and had input from folks here) was a heckuva price, especially the shape she's in: mechanically and functionally, she is 100%; no barrel pitting, internal problems; of course her finish has some wear (it's the original black army), and the magazine's lips are battered, although it still feeds 100%, it just won't drop completely free on release, whereas all my different modern ones do. I think she's more valuable money-wise than what I got her for; but, that is irrelevant to me. I am just so blessed to have her. I have fired her with modern non-corrosive ammunition with lead round-nosed bullets (as one gunsmith told me she was fired with when she first went into "the service"), and I will fire her again occasionally. The FUN is HAVING one in pretty pristine, functional condition! I have several other handguns, including 5 other modern 1911 platforms... but, sir, the pure JOY of knowing I have one of the originals is just... she was a dream come true, especially when I found she was mechanically sound and fireable and 100%.
You had some BEAUTIFUL photos! As Hunter and the others said, WOW! Thank you for sharing, and welcome, welcome.

She is No. 4978xx. I personally wish I could get a modern 1911 (Colt's WWI Repro Model), so I could carry a 1911 vs a 1911A1 like my other 5!
Sir, enjoy this one for what it is.
Mick
