i have a remington rand m 1911 a1 u s army serial # 101,1xx with a stamp under the clip release. it is a circle about the size of a pencil eraser with a w p in the center with a c over the w p. anyone know what this is or when it was made?

Colt frame from the end of 1914. WPG stamp for Maj. Walter G. Penfield, Army Inspector of Ordnance. Is the M1911A1 US ARMY on the slide or the frame?

M1911A1 ... in that area indicates a replacement slide. I've seen a few RIA reworks with that stamped on the frame is why I asked. About 100,000 early pistols have the Maj. Penfield inspector stamp.

Is the M 1911 A1 U.S. ARMY handstamped or does it appear to be a factory rollmark? From AUG '38 - OCT '43 spare slides made by Colt, Ithaca, RR, and US&S were marked that way from the factories. I have observed some RIA rebuilds like Doran said that had the designation handstamped. I know of at least two examples that had '50SA Korean War Era Colt Commercial/Military replacement slides marked that way. :)

It sounds like your slide is one of the AUG '38 - OCT '43 spare slides.
