First, thanks for all the help on my other posts...

One of the guns I purchased a year ago December, was a very nice MkIV Series 80 Stainless. The black medallion grips have the 150 year medallion. Not sure if that means anything special, but... might give you and idea of production period

I THINK the sites have been replaced, because the front site is a bit longer than any of my other colts.

Shot it for the first time yesterday and it shoots 12 inches left at 25 yards. I examined the front site and it was wiggling, and it is also canted slightly so that the rear of the site is angling towards the right side of the gun... nice...

so, I need that fixed. There is a local gunsmith, but I do not know if he is or is not good at 1911s.

Since I could pop of the slide and send it somewhere, what would you guys recommend?

If I have to get the work done, maybe I should just go all the way and put some nice night sites on it....

Love to hear your thoughts.

I had GCNM with a loose front sight,Sent it to colt for a new one, very good customer service, had it back in about 35 days.Unless you have a smith you can trust,I would go that route.

I just cross posted this (my post) from the Colt forum... I will hop back over there and see if I can delete or at least note it as such.... I think this is where this question should have been anyway...

I will give Colt a call tomorrow

I just went out this evening and bought a brand new Stainless Series 70 that has been sitting on the wall of the local shop for about a year.

there is also a lightweight commander sitting there for nearly the same amount of time. They are not overpriced... I don't get it.

Anyway...

I have moved this site question over to the Gunsmithing forum where it probably belongs...

I may end up selling this very nice older Mk IV with front loose site and move on ... I only paid $550 plus shipping and transfer, so I may just put it on consignment at another local shop and let the next guy deal with the site... that is unless I can find a painless solution to the site issue.

I presume this front sight is staked, not dovetailed? I shot that type of sight off my Commander. I bought a new one and had a local 'smith install it. Bad plan, I shot it right off again after only 10 or 12 shots. I plan to have a dovetailed sight installed.

Hi

At one time Colt had a tough time putting on front sights. If your pistol is old enough the sights may be original.

There isn't a lot of material on the post on most sights. Re-staking them is probably not going to work very well. I'd just replace it.

Yes it is staked....

I think the prior owner did the same thing as you describe... what a mess. You can see the from the inside of the slide where they guy poked through and tried to clean it up.

A response I got from the COLT forum was to send it back to Colt I plan to give them a call tomorrow.
