I bought Brownells extra power spring kit, it came with stock 16 lb up to 24 lb, plus the extra power firing pin springs. I would start at 20 and see how your pistol functions, then work up or down from there. It will be obvious after a few mags what spring your pistol likes with the hot ammo.

Probably 20 will do it but you may need as high as 24. What brand and weight ammo are you using?

Hi
With a 1911 I'm not sure that the barrel matters a whole lot in terms of +P ammo. Most of the issue is how well the barrel is hand fit to the slide. After that it's how much pounding your specific slide and fame can take.

This is a very general question and I do not think you will get any real answers. Why are you saying that your barrel can't handle +P loads? Case bulging? I mean that's the only problem I can see you can have from a hot load and a standard barrel. And of course, the spring question is moot, you have to experiment with your loads. A shock buff can be a good diagnostic tool in this case. If it is shred to pieces within 100 rounds, your spring is obviously too light.

Just out of couriosity, if you want more stomp than the 45, why not go find a colt Delta Elite in 10 mm. That caliber shoots like a 41 mag. I love the 45, but recognize that it will never be a fast mover. I dont care for the 9 mm but a 9 on crutches can outrun a 45.

If you decide to replace the barrel, I'm partial to BarSto match barrels and bushings...we install dozens every year and they are consistent from barrel to barrel (note - the match version must be fitted -- the semi-drop-in less so, but still needs some work 50% of the time)...

Psssst: your stock barrel should be fine for the loads you are asking about. Just don't go overboard on springs. +P rounds are not that much of a pressure increase over standard full loads. Std = 21,000psi +P = a few thousand more psi, nothing close to the pressures entertained in the 9mm/40S&W/10mm...
I run a .460 Rowland with 24lb springs and a comp through an all steel 1911...it specs out at 38,000psi...
