I've heard of MSH hones but has anyone got a good "diy" idea for a rather roughly drilled/machined main spring hole ?

I'm lost on your question.

The main spring channel in my main spring housing.

Halito. Have you tried a set of jewelers files? That's the first thing that comes to my mind anyway. Love the 1911, NE USA (nice and cool up there), and this forum.

UMM-- take a step or two back. Why are you asking us this question?
inquiring minds, etc..

T ake a small dremel bit, somewhat smaller then the main spring hole. Secure a piece of 400+ grit emory cloth on it and wrap in the direction so it doesn't unwind on you. Run it up & down the hole until it shines inside.
Also, taper & polish the lower edge of the spring cap, it'll function smoother as well.

Thank you very much for the idea wichaka. I'm going to give it a try. I forgot to mention that the channel was rather rusty when I bought the gun and gave it a strip down to put in a service pack of Wolff Springs. I'm thinking it took a tumble in some water prior to my ownership. Again, you guys are the best ! :)

Polishing the I.D. of the MSH is something I routinely do on my 1911s. Back when I had access to a hone, that's what I used, but these days I use a mandrel wrapped with 320 or 400 grit cloth, chucked up in a drill motor. Depending on the quality of the original hole, sometimes doing this makes a pretty noticeable difference in smoothness while hand-cocking the hammer.

I use a wood dowell (very cheap and easy to get) with a slot in the end, paper folded crosswise - fold inserted into slot - so both sides have abrasives showing, otherwise used exactly as Black Talon says.

Thank you all for the suggestions ! It's on the weekend to-do list.

Also helps to work the dowell vertically (up / down) after using the drill. It does help smooth the action. Good luck.

Tried the dowel & 400 grit today and it polished it up rather well and will be doing my other 1911's asap. Thanks again everyone for the rather easy tune !
