I am new to 1911's and was wondering if the Kimber ambi thumb safety, that looks like the King one, will work on a Colt 1991A1 Commander. It looks the same, but costs less, and as a true portsider, I need an ambi, and have heard from you all, that the King version is the better designed ambi.

It will fit... As with all safetys, it is not a drop in part though... you will need to make sure it is functioning properly... If you are new to the 1911, I suggest that you have a profesional install it for you to make sure everything is safe..... As far as the Kings being a better design, I don't know.....

There's a thread going, somewhere, that indicates a couple of folks are having "issues" with the new Kimber safety. The safety depends on the fit of the extended hammer pin in its dovetail on the right safety half (the one operated by the left tumb), and someone reported loosening of the fit. I'm having one of these safeties installed in a Springfield hi-cap, which can't use the Swenson-style safety, but I don't have the gun in hand, yet. While I like the elegance of the hammer pin retention, I've never had a problem with Swenson-style safeties, regardless of maker. Since the Kimber and King's parts are so similar in design, I'd be looking for the one that's better executed.

I have never had a safety that wouldn't fit and function, however some require more effort to fit them to the new pistol. I would not try to intall a used one in a new pistol.

I went ahead and ordered the King ambi safety. I should get it on Saturday. Now I need to find a local smith to install it for me. :D
