Love this site, used this site 3 yrs ago and all problems solved, now a new problem. replaced all springs, pins, and sear. Now I have no safety.
1. racked slide and pulled trigger without gripping the saftey and it fires
2. racked slide and pulled trigger with thumb safety on and hammer drops simutanious the thumb safety drops
I also put in new trigger. The hammer is origanal, and in decent shape. All parts came from kimber.
I own a colt, springfield, and 3 S.A.M. I customized the sam's and had great results and 1 is better than the colt and springfield.
Hope someone can rescue my handgun. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum.
The 1911a1 thumb safety is supposed to stop movement of the hammer and the grip safety is designed to stop movement of the trigger. It sound like you have a couple of problems.
Not knowing your level of expertise, I would suggest that you see the friendly neighborhood gunsmith. The fixes should not cost too much.
In the mean time, please do not fire your 1911.
Good luck

First of all welcom to the forums!
Problem 1) The new trigger is not mated to the grip safety lug. That's the finger that comes out horizontally from the grip safety that stops the trigger. That needs to be mated to the trigger bow. Hopefully its just an adjustment that needs to be made. If not you'll have to peen the end to lengthen it a bit.........or you're stuck trying to find another grip safety with a longer finger. But my first guess.........is the adjustment is off.
2) The thumb safety has not been mated to the sear lug. Take off the grip safety from the gun, now reassemble everything else. Now you can see how the lug on the thumb safety mates with the sear lug. My first guess is that there's not enough engagement on the sear itself from the safety...........i.e., there's not enough lug on the safety to fully engage the sear. You may have to get a new safety and fit it to the sear.
Does the thumb safety completely engage? Does it goes all the way up? or is it stopped from fully engaging into the slide?

Thanks for the info. I do have experiance in gun smithing , self tought. I built 3 rifle and custom stocks. Now i'm learning on 1911. I guessed that I probly needed parts that matched the trigger now you mentioned it also, I'm cheap so I didn't buy the higher priced items, but now i learned something. I'll buy the needed items and replace them. I'll keep you informed.
Thanks,
shane

Shane, I've found that if I try to save money by purchasing inexpensive parts, I end up buying the better later. Always go for the best you can afford.

If you haven't already, pick up Jerry Kuhnhausens Colt 45 shop manual. It'll save alot of heart ache in the long run........

I used to be the worlds worst at trying to save a little and going with cheaper items. Finally, after 51 years, I have realized that cheaper and economical are two entirely different items. I now buy the highest quality for the most inexpensive price. Good advice you are giving. Have a great day.
