This might seem like a stupid question, but something I've always wondered. Is it possible for a kid of about the age 16 to buy a gun online? I know you need a dealer with a valid FFL in order to ship firearms, but could it be possible. I mean the kid could give out his/her parent's information for credit card and how closely do the dealers pay attention to who buys the guns online? If this all sounds like an amateur then you are right. I'm asking because for school I have to write a research paper about gun laws and the whole online buying thing seemed interesting to put in the paper.

No, it is not a stupid question and no, it is not possible for a kid of 16 to get a firearm over the internet. The firearm should be shipped to an FFL holder and the FFL holder will complete all forms required (including checking id's). Go to the BATFE site for a more complete answer.

You must be 18 to purchase a shotgun or rifle and 21 for handgun at a minimum. Depending on your location additional laws and regulations may apply. Doesn't matter whether its over the internet or in person. Having someone buy one for you (i.e. a straw purchase) is also illegal.

Even if you were of legal age the gun would have to be shipped from the seller on the net to a FFL holder in your area. The FFL dealer is required to complete all necessary paperwork and procedures before releasing the firearm to you.

An FFL is only needed for an interstate transfer!

Intrastate transfers (within the same state) need no FFL intervention at all unless state or local laws require it. In Ohio, for example, I can ship a firearm to anyone else within Ohio who is legally entitled to own it.

Just like buying one on the street requires no FFL.

I'm sure your teacher is looking for a recommendation of ways to close these "loop holes" but no new laws are going to change any illegal practices. Criminals don't obey the laws anyway -- reference Columbine.

To directly answer your question about a kid buying a gun online, the answer is yes that could happen. But, any internet site will require a shipment, wether inter, or intrastate to an FFL holder. What happens at the said FFL holder is a whole 'nother story. Gun laws only keep the honest people honest. A criminal will find a way.
