Anyone know of any aftermarket recoil spring plugs besides the standard checkered ones? Something like those used for the full length guide rods but capped....make any sense?

EGW is making a recoil spring plug with a flat face (not checkered), on which you can also have your initial imprinted. Have a look here:

Definitely check EGW's site. Here's another pic of the one like Wichaka posted. It's made to go with their "thick flange bushing."

That's a better pic than mine Hersh......
Checkout their thick flange bushing too, definately worth the price!
Makes a great combo to have on any 1911........

Just wait until I get back from the SHOT Show. I'll have George send me one of these, I love it.

I am, but it is only for my wife's "things you should bring me" and the things for the kids. I ain't bringing back anything ... weird, those airport inspectors can be stupid and our customs here even worst.

Thanks to all for the input, might go with that....if only they made one with a concave end....You know what i'm trying to get at? Make it look like an over under mini-shotgun. Don't ask me why, I just do...might have to build it my durn self...

Speaking of building it yourself....
For DISPLAY/ENTERTAINMENT ONLY: You can make an interesting looking recoil spring plug out of a .45 case, with the rim and case head filed slightly square to retain the bushing properly. The bushing should rest on the head, with the rim keeping the bushing from rotating.
It's an oddball look, but it sure is "custom".

Will try to get a pic,but I'm changing out a water pump tonight...busy,busy,busy!
You can actually just stuff a .45 case in place of your recoil spring plug to verify fit. An unmodified case won't keep the bushing from rotating unless you turn down the rim diameter some.
Give it a try, just don't shoot with it installed! :D

I like this style plug (http://www.blindhogg.com/pics/smiley2.jpg) from Chris at Blindhogg.

Exactly!
I knew someone else had to have done this....
Thanks for taking a pic. I did mine with a beat up IMI case. Your Remington case looks more fitting for the 1911.
Did you relieve the rim and square the case head so it fits on the case head,or is it just resting on the rim?

How does the brass hold up against the heavy cycling of the pistol over time?

I ground off the shape of the bushing from the rim and it locks into place.......
Tom, i haven't shot with it yet due to weather but i plan to. i'll let you know how it goes.

Sorry I took so long folks.........the thing works. Fired about 50 rounds even though that's not even close to a real test but it held pretty good. Just thought i'd let you know.
