Just finished my first build-up using the ample info of this site!. All of the functioning seems right, according to the "Function Checking an 1911" article, except the test where I hold the trigger and pull back the slide. Slide would not pull back at all. (test #2). Ran numerous dummies thru it and they seem to feed just fine. Am I ready to shoot or should I do some more checking? What is the correct procedure to do a live-fire test? Load one, shoot. If all ok, load 2, shoot, etc?

Sorry if this has been asked before. Did a search and did not come up with anything...

John, I will normally load 1 in mag, then shoot. Load 2 in mag, then shoot. Load 5 in mag, then shoot. I had one that went full auto on round three or greater.

I am concerned about slide not going back if the trigger is pulled. Sounds like disconnector is not moving into postion as it should. The slide will "push" the disconnector down to allow a reset of the sear. If the disconnector is not going down, then the slide will not operate. THIS COULD LEAD TO A DANGEROUS EVENT. DO NOT FIRE UNTIL THE PROBLEM IS FIXED.

You'll get it. Have patience. And congrats on the first build.:)

Is this caused by a too long disconnector? If i hold the slide back, press the trigger, the disconnector will hold the slide back until I let off a bit on the trigger. The slide will then close and the hammer will remain cocked. What would cause the disconnector to hang up. Should I polish the hole that it rides in? What about polishing the part that pokes up into the slide? Measured it according to Kuhnhausen when I installed it and did not think it was too long. Will pull it out and remeasure it.

Need ideas on how to debug this... Will also search on fitting the disconnector...

on 1st edit - OK, read the sticky on the disconnector. Still do not understand how to correct this. Know not to touch the top... If it is too long, what is the procedure to fit the bottom that rides on the sear. Kuhnhausen not clear on this...in book 1. Any better fitting descriptions avail?

on 2nd edit - Found an article by 1911Tuner from around June 2004. Will follow that and see where I get. I did no polishing or tuning. That is probably my problem...

Glad I asked! Don't need a full auto handgun!!!

That was it - long disconnector. Was 1.325. Shortened to 1.305 and all is working correctly now. Also polished the edges that were described in 1911tuner's post from June. Works exactly like it should now.

Thanks much!

Any time I have made a change in a pistol, I load one round in the mag, chamber that round and fire. I do this a few times, then start loading two in the mag and repeating the process. The idea is if there is a problem, such as full auto fire, two or three rounds are easier to control than seven. I have been fortunate in not personally experiencing full auto fire, but I have a friend who is not so fortunate.

I had an SKS slamfire and go full auto and dump out a 30 round mag in about 5 seconds onetime luckeyy I had the muzzel down rang when it went off.

Hogleg,

Glad you got your problem solved!

Thanks for posting your situation, I learned a lot from it.

Also, could you explain who or what Kuhnhausen is?

Everytime I see your name I think of the movie Mclintock with John Wayne. In the movie he always refers to his sidekicks revolver as a "hogleg"

HI,

Here is a link to the Kuhnhausen books - http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=13805&title=Jerry+Kuhnhausen+SHOP+MANUALS

Got to be the bible of 1911s.

As to the name, that is my cowboy alias. I dress up and shoot cowboy guns with a bunch of like minded folks once a month. Here is the organization that sponsors it - http://www.sassnet.com A good excuse to shoot guns and fun too! To your specific question, that is where I came up with it. John Wayne is held in high esteem by this group of folks...

You need volume two.

I've never understood how someone can build a 1911 without it.

All the information you need, as well as the three critical measurements and specifications are on page 165 of volume two, as well as some notes.

Good luck!

Hogleg thanks for the info. I had no idea those books existed. Proves why this forum is so great!
