Hello all,
This is my first official post and I'm looking for some information, so I came to the place where the people know the most.
I am looking to buy a M1911, I've been wanting one for a long time. I live on a farm in IN and have rifles and shotguns, now it's time for a handgun.
Ok now, let's get to business, I want to know what the difference between the colt's and the springfield's are. I have been eye-balling them at the local gun shows and have noticed they go for about the same price.
So which one guys, I know most of you on this side of the forum will be partial to colts and I kinda am myself, but I want to fully know what i'm buying.
So what do I look for to buy and what do I look for to stay away from?
Thanks all and keep up the good work,
Chris Osborne

Welcome aboard!
Either one is likely to be a good shooter right out of the box. Springfield offers tons of options, Colt offers just a few. I suggest you look at examples of both before buying.

I doubt they are selling for the same price when you compare the features of each. The most expensive Chevrolet sells for about the same price as the cheapest Mercedes.
Catch my drift?
Go with the Colt.

Go with the Colt. All Iam sayin is both would be a good base to start with, and yes, colt might be alittle more, just because it say's,colt! By the way..does Mercedes have a HEMI!!!!

Hey Junior,
Relax. My post was directed to the starter of the thread. He's the one that said they were about the same price, not you.
Hemi this! Mercedes SL65 AMG = 604 hp @ 5500 rpm, 738 lb-ft @ 2,000 - 4,000 rpmhttp://members.cox.net/rtset/GIfs/confused18.gif

I have two Colt's M1911s and they've been accurate and reliable right out of the box.
The pistol I recommend as a "first" M1911, though, is the parkerized Springfield full size PX9109L http://www.springfield-armory.com/images/pistols/PX9109LLarge.jpg This pistol represents what a good, basic mass produced M1911A1 should be.
This pistol is in the $600 - $650 range, has good night sights, and the appropriate bells and whistles folks seem to add to basic pistols. In addition it's available "everywhere". This pistol's Parker finish will hold up well around the farm and it's not so pretty that you'll leave it in the house and never carry it.
Remember, this is your first M1911A1. In a few months of carrying and shooting this around the farm you'll develop a feel for the M1911 and can then determine what your "ideal" M1911 may be. When you handle Colt's or any other brand's models -- new or used -- you'll have a baseline to judge them by.

Hey thanks guys. Basically they are both a real good shooter and you can't go wrong. I will have to do more research apparently on the price. They were about 500 for a brand new colt, with the non-glossy finish.
Oh yeah, and yes, mercedes does have a hemi, they own diamler chrysler, the make of dodge, and therefore the hemi engine.
I do appreciate the information though, and I can't wait to get one and put my 2 cents on this website

Hello Indytech,
Welcome to the forum!
You said you have been to some gun shows, so you probably know where you can find a shooting range. Many indoor shooting ranges offer rental guns. Perhaps you could locate one and by chance they just might have a Colt and a Springfield you could try. Good luck in your search and have fun doing it you lucky dog!
