View Full Version : Poll

Since the poll on Kimbers gave some interesting results I thought that doing the same poll on other brands would be fair. Since manufactorers look over this site it's seems the right thing to do so that we would not be accused of singling out one brand.

Thanks
Phil

I should add that the problem I had fixed was a creepy trigger pull. Some might not call that a problem, but at $900 a pop, I want a nicer trigger than the one Colt delivered from the factory.

I have 3 NRM blue Commanders new, 1 S70 Government LNIB used, 2 S/S
Officers used, 2 blue steel Compacts used.
The Commanders are so perfect I can't stop buying them.
I have never had one problem with any of my Colts.
All are fed regularly with factory WWB 230gr. FMJ's and handloads using
Win. 230gr.FMJ's,230gr.JHP's,Horn. 200gr.JHP's,Hardcast 230gr.RN and
SWC 200gr.
All use standard Colt factory magazines.

The last new Colt I bought had a too-tight extractor that inhibited feeding, and the bushing fit was weird; tight on the barrel and loose in the slide. I tweaked the extractor, before firing it the first time, and the gun has run well since. I had my local gunsmithing services provider install a match bushing and recrown the barrel, which wasn't absolutely required, but necessary to satisfy me.

What is missing in the poll is numbers of guns and rounds fired. I voted 0 problems in the Kimber poll on my two full size Kimbers, each having over 2K rounds. Yet in that time period I have purchased 8 Colts. Of those I have fired over 2K rounds through 6 and over 1K through the other two. One of the 8 is a light weight Commander and the other a small Defender. Zero problems on the Colts also, but it seems it should count more.

I purchased a Colt Defender two months ago and other than getting empty shell casings thrown in my face, it has been a great gun. After 250 rounds, it is getting better.

No functional problems, but the fit was "poor".

Meaning the plunger tube was loose and I replaced it. Slide didn't match the frame in the rear, indicating improper barrel fit but it still worked. Sloppy slide to frame.

So, good and bad.

I'm just trying to make the poll just like the Kimber poll. I put an identical poll on each brand of 1911. I appreciate evryones participation. I think I know how the poll results are going to come out. We'll see:-)

I own five Colts and have had absolutely no problems with four of them. The fifth developed a minor problem with the slide stop, but I expect that to be cured to my complete satisfaction when Colt reopens January 2, 2007.

Of the five *new* 1911 style Colts that I've puchased so far this year, one had a cosmetic problem that ultimately ended with it being replaced by Colt. All have functioned flawlessly, though.

I picked up my SS Gold Cup Trophy (05070X) in September of ’06. The fit and finish were excellent. After stripping and cleaning, I replaced the wrap around grips with wood grips and made my way to the range. The accuracy was terrific. I now have 300 rds through it using WWB 230 FMJ and factory mags (one 7 rd and one 8 rd?) without a FTF or FTE. I purchased two Wilson 47D mags and had one failure to lock the slide back. I’m about ready for a bench rest to dial in the sights.

The only issues were a broken pistol plug, no warrantee card, and the foam padding in the blue case was boogered. (sorry for the technical term)

I’m very satisfied with my GCT

This was an easy vote, but with explaination. I have two Colts bought new. An engraved GM that had a marvelous trigger from the factory. Not quite to Gold Cup standards, but very close! And a Defender. Both have been 100% in form and function. The Defender shot high at distance, hardly a fault for it's intended use, but Mark helped me with sights to get it shooting where I was looking and I appreciate that. I also have a SS Combat Commander that has been excellent also but as I bought that used, I have no idea what it's history has been. I do know that it has a Bar-sto barrel in it but if that was done by a previous owner because he needed to or if he just wanted to, who knows? I have been extremely pleased with these Colts and plan to own more of them. 44 Man

Of my 9 Colts, 3 I bought NIB and have had absolutely no issues with. Of the 6 used ones; I had slide lock back probs with a GCT that were addressed with a new slide lock and extraction problems with a 1978 series 70 that were easily adressed with a new recoil spring and extractor tuning.

I've purchased 3 new Colts this year. A matte 1991A1 Government, a blue Gold Cup Trophy, and a stainless Commander. The first two were perfect, the Commander had an issue: it was rusty. Rust spots all over the pistol that was new! Thankfully my dealer shipped it back to the distributor who sent a replacement that was flawless. That was a strange problem and no one knows whether it was a problem with Colt or a problem with the distributor.

But either way, the problem was handled quickly and I got what I wanted.

I'm glad a lot of people are posting explainations with the vote. It helps. I'm not voting in these. I can say I have never had a problem Colt.

Of the two Commanders that I have purchased the only problem I encountered was with the XSE, and that being numerous failure-to-feeds. My lack of knowledge to this problem is the only reason I sold it. This is before I came upon this forum. Of course I regret selling it.

Phil,

My 1991A1 ORM Commander was a bit of a problem child. It had a major problem with FTRTB which is a non-no for a carry gun and this was my intent for the pistol. It also ejected inconsistently which, to me, was more of an annoyance than a major issue.

Tuner, Hunter and several others here worked with me to get the problems resolved, but I decided to send it to a 1911 'smith since my skills are limited and I was beginning to think I might be making things worse.

The gun was sent to Bob Rodgers http://www.rodgerspistolsmithing.com/ Bob said the breechface was too "snug" and he opened up the tolerance and tweaked the extractor which solved the RTB issue. He also installed an oversized EGW FP stop which remedied the ejection.

Any manufacturer can let an occasional one slip through QC and after Bob did his magic the gun runs "like a sewing machine!"
