I've been all over and haven't found what I'm looking for so I thought I would ask you guys. I have a Service Model Ace, Serial No. SM40XXX, and a 70 Series Gov't in 9mm, Serial No. 70L19XXX. I'm trying to date the manufacture of them and am stuck, or simply not looking in the right place.

Most of the places I have been the Service Model Ace stops at 1945 with a Serial No. of SM13803, and the 70 Series 9mm stops at 1978 with a Serial No. of 70L11201. Anyone know where else I could look. Thanks.

Call Colt on or after 2 January, they can tell you.

Ditto what OD* said!!!

I called Kathy at Colt this past September and she gave me the manufacturing date for my Service Model Ace. If I recall correctly, she can provide a date for three guns per phone call.

BTW, my SM Ace is SM29XXX and was "born" in 1980... so your Ace is certainly a bit younger! I recently saw a "new" old-stock "unfired" SM Ace (still in the factory box) go for about $2,000 on a GB auction. I'm inclined to purchase one of Colt's factory Archive letters to accompany my SM Ace... it's well worth the cost for what it can add to the pistol's value- which is $75 if I interpret their price list properly.

I recently asked a related question in the historical section and here are the 2 directions I was pointed: first try http://proofhouse.com/index.htm (good for more than just Colt's) or call Kathy at Colt at 1-800-962-Colt. I'll have to call Kathy as Proofhouse listings ended at 1978 for my Colt Python and mine appears to be perhaps a year or two newer. Good luck with your search. If you find another resouce please let us know!

Thanks for the heads up Paul, seems like that place the Proofhouse uses the same info as the others. I will give that Kathy a call and let you guys know what I find out.

Have a good new years.

Just a little heads-up...Colt is closed until January 8.
I sent my SAA .45 to have the cylinder replaced and they told me if I didn't get it there by midday on December 22,that there would be no one there to receive it until the 8th.

I have an invoice from Colt that has stamped in the upper right corner that indicates that "Factory Shutdown from 12-21-06 to 01-08-07. Must be the factory gets more days off for the Holidays than the office help?

Looks like it depends on who ya talk to at Colt as to what kind of answer you'll get.

...no wonder they're always hangin' by a thread from bankruptcy

Please don't believe everything you read on the internet. Colt is not in bankruptcy. I spoke with Mark Roberts right before Christmas and he explained to me that they sell every pistol they make and are back logged. They don't advertise because they don't need to.
It is due to lack of knowledge falsehoods continue to circulate.

It is not that we are unfriendly but to say Colt is hanging by a thread is wrong. Folks who are in to Colt firearms have heard all the rumors that Colt is out of or going out of business so long now that is has gotten old.
What is the question and I will call Colt for you and find out. You state that several of yall have got a different answer to the same question and all I want to do is help.

No need to, you and I were right the first time. The plant is down, Customer Service is OPEN. I dealt with Kathy this morning.

I know OD but I do not want this forum to be another medium to continue to spread unsubstantial rumors of any kind so I don't mind doing a little leg work to stop that from happening.

I'm afraid that will be a losing battle Hunter my friend.
It's about time for the COLT HAS BEEN SOLD rumor to start-up again, I mean it has been almost 6 months now. ;)

I believe you are right. It seems I have a habit of fighting the losing battle or rearranging furniture on that proverbial sinking ship. :D

I still have it in writing that Colt has a Factory Shutdown until the 8th of this month. Got an Email from Colt customer service today, so the customer service people are there, the plant laborers are on vacation.

This is a friendly place we got here, as long as you don't post something that's not correct about Colt.
