Basically coming down to whether I believe there is anything inherently "nicer" about the series 70 repro over a 1991 (in blue), ASIDE from configuration preferences like +/- firing pin block, commander vs govt etc. If not, I'm about to let price make the decision on these factors and go with the $639 one.

I mean, obviously the custom shop means something when comparing the wwi repro, but is the s70 repro closer to quality of finish illustrated in the top or bottom pic?

The Series 70 "re-issue" pistol bluing is unlike the WWI reproduction, as the latter has a brushed Carbonia finish.

I consider both to possess a high quality finish- which is a Colt trait.

OK completely different finish, the wwi. Carbonia. THanks. Incredible though.

So you think the blue on the s70 re-issue will be the same as any other (current) 1991?

I'll have to refrain from answering this question... don't own a current 1991 Colt, so I cannot objectively compare the two.

I can offer this comparison... my Series 70 re-issue, made in 2005, is very nicely blued. However, I don't believe it equals the quality of finish found on my Service Model Ace, which was made in 1980- it's close, but the older Colt wins.

jlh2600,
I consider myself fortunate to own both. The photos shown below were taken at similar angles with identical lighting, so I'll let you be the judge as to the quality of the blue finish of each model.

I might also add that the much touted trigger differences between a pistol equipped with the Series 80 firing pin stop, and those without, have been overblown, as far as my pistols are concerned. The Series 70 guns consistently come in at 4 lbs., while the Commander averages 4.2 lbs.

I don't think there is much difference in finish on the examples I have seen. On my examples the finish is even and nice on both. I think that the only reason that the series 70 comes in a blue Colt Custom shop box is so they can get around the lawyers. And also there was a rumor that the Blue plastic Colt box scratched the finish on the series 70???? :D

ok now larry's just messing with my head. If it's problematic with the s70 finish, yet the 1991 finish is ok when shipped in the same cases... nm.

Steve- I think I can tell a difference, but both of those finishes look good to me. Let me ask you this. If there were no other diffs b/t the two, could you pick them apart (significant enough to notice in person just based on fin9ish)? Photos can be tricky.

Thanks all & Merry Christmas.

Larry,
One thing to which current Colt owners can testify, the blue plastic Colt case is a tight fit. ;) While I cannot definitively state that my XSE got it's very slight blemish from the case, I tend to lean in that direction. That said, there is no telling how many folks unpacked/packed that pistol at the distributor.

Putting me on the spot, eh?
Okay, subjectively speaking, I think that the Series 70 has the better finish.

Mine look the same to me, but my 70 repro is an early model.

Oh yea I agree 100%....The current plastic box has scratched a few of my Colts also..... ;)
