I'm new to the 1911 community. I am getting a 1911 for graduation (wanted one for years) and I figured it would be perfect to engrave it. Anyone have opinions on their favorite brand of 1911 still in production. Do I have to buy a new slide to engrave because most of manufacturers name and numbers etc? I think I heard of somone ordering their gun from Springfield already engraved. Thanks!

It looks as if members do not have any great expertise on this subject, doesn't it?
Sorry for the luck of responses!

Being an art unto itself, I truly admire a person with the talent of hand engraving. The laser engraving is cheaper and does not require the same skill, but does make it a bit more affordable.

My son is graduating in May. I have a lovely Colt I'd like to give him. But if I did he would sell it for 50 cents on the dollar to buy computer games. Maybe when he graduates from college.
Get a series 80 blue Colt with a horsey on the slide and send it to someone like this http://www.gunfancy.com/refinishing.htm
or this

and have them put your commemorating message on the dust cover where they used to stamp US Government Property

Here's a nice example from Michael Gouse. He does very nice work and his prices a nd turn-around time are excellent.
