I'm fairly new to the 1911 branch of pistol ownership and shooting. I've been a longtime Colt afficianado after my father's purchase of a beautiful (believe it to be a mid to late '70's) Python .357 back in the early 80's which I have inherited and will never part with. The mile deep royal blue finish, smooth-as-silk trigger, and awesome accuracy speak well of Colt's quality, not to mention the Colt's of others that I've fired. I have finally acted on my desire for a 1911 with the prancing horse (O101XSE) and wonder why I waited!
I've done a lot of studying of late both on this forum and wherever else I can to learn the history and evolution of this venerable sidearm. Could someone give me a brief "Cliff's Notes" version of the differences between the initial firing system and it's transition to the 70 series and into the 80 series? I know I can go to the library and do my due diligence which I plan to over time for the whole 1911 pistol but a quick once-over would be most appreciated as I plan on adding to the stable with some older style new Colt's over time. I'm considering ones such as the WWI Replica, if I can find one; perhaps a WWII if I feel rich, famous and lucky enough to find a worthy one; as well as something from the 70's series and 1991 series. Not necessarily one of each but I want to better versed before I add many more. Thanks in advance to all - what a great find this forum has been!
(note to moderator - I thought about placing this in the historical section but decided that since this was purely Colt related I was better served here. )

Will do, and thanks. I kinda regeret not waiting for a Defender instead jumping at the Kimber Ultra Carry. I haven't fired it yet and I'm sure I'll like 'er for the carry piece but that XSE is as good shootin' as it is beautiful...
