Hi all, newb here (again). I have a Kimber CDP II Elite, great gun, daily carry, but ... came with ambi-safety that keeps getting bumped off when holstered. I don't want to have someone install a new left only safety since the gun works great and has never had a problem. My question is, "Can I just cut off the right hand side lever and leave the remaining shaft portion inside?" I figure I would protect the slide and then dremel cut the safety right behind the lever portion, then smooth & detail the end of the remaining shaft.

Get a new one and fit it properly, not that terribly expensive. Usually the shaft is two parts, each half-end attached to the side part of the safety, so if you remove the right half one, you will not have a full shaft.

Your Ambi safety should remain so that if you need to shoot off handed you can. I put an ambi safety on my carry gun for this reason. If the off side, to you, is bothersome you can narrow it down almost to the thickness of the grip. I did mine this way because the ejection side annoyed my trigger finger. It still works but doesn't bother. If you want I can send you a photo of what I did as an example?

The off-hand side is pretty thin to start with. I had though about cutting it shorter so it wouldn't get hit as easily. As far as off-hand shooting, when practicing I find I can easily reach my off-hand thumb back over the slide and flip the safety down.
Jim, I would like to see what modifications you made to see how it compares to my ambi side. My safety looks nearly identical to an Ed Brown carry ambi.

I"m new to the 1911 forum so I'll perhaps have a little trouble getting the photo into this message I've had no luck. Perhaps someone can give me a little help?

in the on position. Go very slow with a jewelers round or half round file and make a shallow pocket for the plunger to get a better purchase on the safety. Go slow and check You can relieve the area where the spring plunger on the safety contacts the safety when your work often.
The other thing you can do is remove the spring from the plunger tube and stretch it a little to give a little more tension.
