You mean standard grips will not work on them? I thought they were the same, but I have never tried to change a pair.

Well he is sorta right............Mine had to be machined to fit the ambi safety and the grip screws.
Here's a pic......

Grip safety, I understand, if you got a set which was not machined for the safety. But grip screws? What? Are they using non-standard screws??

These fit no problem, the stock screws worked just fine.

I also have a set of these on the way in the semi checkered, I don't foresee any issues as these pistols are built to mil spec.

However, it's always prudent to have spare bushings and screws on hand. My SA had a bushing on each side fall out while changing grips.

if you just want checkered double diamond black rubber, both kimber brand and hogue should work just fine.

I guess it was just the ones I bought then.........the screws were just a tad bit small/just a hair though.

Thanks for the replys, I really like the ones in the pic giving it a Warrior look but I dont want to go through the hassel of having to have them ground down. I wonder if the Kimber grips for the Warrior series need to be ground since they come with a ambi-safety?
Thanks

The Hogue palm swell grips I put on my PT1911 had to be trimed to allow the right side safety lever to move to the off position. A very quick & easy fix with the old x-acto knife. The screw holes lined up just like any other 1911.

The heads of the factory grip screws are oversize.
Funny, it never even occured to me to alter the grips.
I just bought a set of aftermarket grip screws and stored the Taurus screws with the removed grips.
If you order any grips that are specified for ambidextrous safety, they will fit the Taurus.

All the grips I tried on mine before settling on one fit.

Could someone please post a picture of the right side of their pistol with unaltered aftermarket grips and the safety fully off. I am in the same shape as rogue007, except I had to alter the factory grips so that the safety would fully disengage. The right side hit the top of the factory grip. I don't want to spend the money on a set of grips that won't fit.
Thanks.

All you have to do when ordering is specify that the gun has an ambidextrous safety and the grips should come already relieved.

I understand that grips made for an ambidextrous safety should fit fine. However, it is also a fair assumption that the grips supplied with the pistol should also allow the safety to function properly. Unfortunately, the safety on my pistol would not go fully to the off position until I removed what I consider a sizable piece from the top, very much like rogue007 had to do.
Are you saying that any right hand grip ordered for an ambidextrous pistol will look like rogue007's? If so, no problem. On the other hand, I have never seen a picture of the right hand grip of an ambidextrous set that looked anything like my altered right hand grip or rogue007's. That is why I would like to see a picture. Maybe my safety lever is different. I really don't know.
Thanks.

I bought two of the PT1911's. My buddy talked me out of one.
Both factory sets fit without relief on top of the grip.
I bought aftermarket grips for both (from the same maker) and they did not have to be relieved at the top,
The only mod was a shallow relief on the back of the right grip for the flat lever on the safety.
As far as the grip screws go, here are some measurements.
Wilson hex head - .271
Taurus factory -.294
unk stainless - .273
I used the last ones to mount the aftermarket grips on the 2nd PT1911 and didn't keep the package. I had bought them from Midway as spares.
The Taurus screws are definitely oversize. It makes more sense to buy an extra set of grip screws and keep the Taurus screws with the Taurus grips. I can't imagine enlarging the hole in the new grips.

I would switch out the grips right now and take some pics, but my Taurus in packed up under the tree waiting for christmas.
My GF paid for it, and I had to sign for it, so I got home just a few minutes before she did so i could take a pic so it would tie me over.
The grips I ordered were a little thick, so I had them relieved on the top so the ambi-safety could fit.
Probably any other grip that is a bit thinner will not have to be relieved. I wanted
these grips, so I modified them to fit what was on the gun. I will probably buy another set
so I could use regular grip screws but the ones on the gun are fine right now.
I got the gun in at the FFL/gun-smith, looked it over. Gave him the grips, he took measurements.
Placed them in a milling machine, made the cuts. Fitted them to the gun, signed the paperwork,
and left with them.
I wouldnt take a dremel to them, as the material is to thin at the safety bar, it could chip pretty bad in the area.
