After being grossly disappointed with the Kimber Grand Raptor I bought, I am looking for the most accurate Colt 1911 style pistol. I would prefer to have a decent trigger in it when I buy it but having a trigger job done on it is not a problem. I really like the look of the Special Combat. I also want adjustable sights and putting different ones on the gun is not a problem. I want an accurate pistol with a good trigger. So what am I buying? Gold Cup, Special Combat, ????????

I belive either is a great choice......it really depends how much you want to spend. Say 850-900 for a Gold Cup....1250-1400 for a Special Combat. The gold Cup is a production piece, while the Special Combat is a custom shop piece.

I have a Special Combat Gov't that is an absolute tack driver.

We are talking one jagged hole! :D

That's my vote.

I've only handled one Special Combat (but I have one on order) and a bunch of Gold Cups. The Special seemed to have a tighter fit barrel, especially at the rear when compared to a Gold Cup.

I have several that are accurate including an old S70 GCNM and a WWI re-pro. Also, I have a 1991 ORM Govt. that has a C&S FCG and a Nowlin trigger with Bo-Mars that doesn't do bad either. If I could justify it to myself (and my debt level), I would have a SCGovt. in hard chrome. :D

I have some Gunsite Pistols that are very accurate, but they have fixed sights. I have the WW1 repro and that thing is pretty good, even with the itty bitty sights. I have a Special Combat Government two tone in 38 Super and it is quite accurate. All of the Colt's I mention here have very good triggers, and it's not just me saying it, people I work with said they were because I brought them in to show them off.

From what Hunter tells me, he could shoot a gnat in the posterior at 20 yards with his Gold Cup. So, if you want pretty and pretty expensive, the Special Combat is a good choice, if you want to save a couple of bucks, you can't go wrong with a Gold Cup.

Why not buy a new series 70 and have it worked over by Yost Bonitz?

The end cost will be higher, but you'll have a fantastic pistol.

Tough question, you'd have to shoot them all. ;)

Although I don't hate it I agree my Kimber Grand Raptor

is not quite as good as either of my Gold Cups (1976 and 1988).

The Special Combat Gov. is in a higher level (and at a higher price)

As is the S&W 945 (which I don't have a picture of....need to do that). Although the 945 is not a 1911 design it also launches lead well, as does the Colt Special Combat Gov. The ones I have are both "50 yard guns". To be fair I have not tested a S&W PC 1911 yet. I want more Colts and I am not rich.

I appreciate the responses. My "go to" gunshop has several Gold Cups but he hasn't found a Special Combat yet. Considering that it is the end of the year and I know he deals before the end of the year to unload inventory, I will probably pick up a Gold Cup and if I don't like it, I know he will give me full trade in on the Special Combat. I may even end up with both. I think I'm likin' that idea better and better.
Thanks,
Trapper

One day I found myself with a very impressive collection of 1911's (Browns, Wilson, Baer, Kimber) but I didn't have a COLT.
Hunter and Hawkmoon educated me somewhat, and a few days later I bought a Special Combat Government on impulse. Mine is the hard chromed model.
Trapper, this thing is nothing short of phenominal in terms of accuracy and reliability. Much "looser" than say, a Baer or Wilson, but keeps blowing out the ten ring.
Buy one. Now !!!!!

"End up with both". Now you're thinking!

Definitely on the right track! :)

I agree with the Captain!

Most people judge the accuracy potentional of a 1911 by the slide to frame fit. It's the barrel fit that's most important.

My SCG is fairly loose in slide to frame, but the barrel is fit very well. It shoots nice small groups.

Hi

Neither Colt straight out of the box is going to blow away a $3,000 target gun. You can take either one to a good shop and get it as accurate as you can afford though. :D :D

My guess is that the Special Combat might be a bit more accurate than the GCT straight out of the box. However the real question is weather you can take a blued GCT in and get it even more accurate for the difference in price.

I suspect that OD or Hunter will come up with some magic Custom Shop package codes that do just that for next to nothing ....

I have a Gunsite Commander that has totally failed to impress me so far, I'm going to keep working with it and try some different ammo and handloads before I call it quits.

I thought you would have traded that for a Kimber by now.

Well maybe it is time to do something different.

Hi

At least from what I have seen if you are using ammo from the majors then handloading isn't going to help a whole lot. If the pistol isn't working for you it's time either to fix it or move on.

They are both great guns. I'd probably get the Special Combat just for the looks. I don't think you'll notice any difference in accuracy between the two.
