Can I change my rear sight without changing the front?
Would like to put on Bomar or preferably a low profile and adjustable Novak style rear. But, can this be done while leaving on factory front (staked)?
Series 80, 1991A1

Thanks in Advance.

I don't know, but the research will be fun for you I think. In the 70's I got a rear adjustable MMC site which would work with the standard (of the 70's) front site. I would guess yes, but you need to contact the site makers and I would check Brownells also.

Well, let me ask this then::::::::

Is it worth it to have dove tail cut in slide for front sight? Unless they make a stake in fiber optic??????

Would that seriously devalue the wpn?

Yes, you can but depending on the rear, it might be too high or low.

Not to me if done correctly (unless it was a rare collectible) but others might say it would. I wish all my Colts had dovetailed fronts.

It's best to have the proper front sight with an adjustable rear.
That way you get the maximum amount of elevation/depression clicks with
your rear sight adjustments.

Dovetailing the front sight, if properly done, can actually increase the
value of your pistol. A dovetailed front sight is stronger than a staked
sight and usually perferred by most shooters.

Don't try to save money by just sticking an adjustable rear sight on and
hoping for the best. Do it right and you will find yourself hitting those 1000 yard shots with your 1991a1.

Yea the more I research, it's best off just to do the whole deal. I am actually seriously considering sending the whole piece to Novak and letting them install their extreme duty fiber optic system.....

If you decide to do it, post some pics when the pistol comes back, I'm not sure how many would like to see it, but I certainly would. :D

You can do that and leave the factory front but it would look much better and you would have more adjustment range if you let Novak put on front and back as you mentioned. It's only a one week turnaround. Also, you don't have to send the whole gun in you can just send in the slide and save a few bucks. Of course you would have to adjust the sights yourself.

I was looking into sending the whole thing in.

Thanks for the input

Sending the entire gun in is probably what I would do as well. I figure if any problems are encountered they would catch that and correct it. I've sent one gun into them and they did a good job. It was back to me in 6 days.

It is expensive to do that, but what else can you do? UPS and FED EX are the ones that can handle it. Usually around $50 or more depending on the level of insurance desired. I've sent 4 pistols to get work done on them, 2 each time insured and between 80 and $100 for the shipping.

It is...

Novak wrote me back today and it was over 250 just to send slide in.....

That will probably end up being the course of action I take.
