Very nice my man...you refinish the slide? Are those McCormick triggers?

BTW, I made the grips on my gun myself...hehehe :D

Hello. Here are a couple of SA pistols I enjoy shooting:

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid154/pf3c9d872ee91b9adec176c6de40c6697/f5820b0b.jpg
Mil-Spec with different grips, bobbed hammer, and edges of the grip safety rounded. This gun's been fired just under a thousand rounds so far with no malfunctions of any kind with any magazine tried.

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid63/p1ff0f81a16d5056a42e63759d900cc05/fc11fe05.jpg
This is a lightly customized lightweight SA .45 that has been used as a carry gun now and then.

Best.

Yes, the trigger is McCormick......and the whole gun was re-parked.

Tony Rist made the grips on the one you see.

Don't bet on the Colt pic thing, as I have more Colts than Sa's. :D

Greetings,
Just thought I would jump in on posting pics. Nothing done to this one as yet, since I have a problem with it shooting low and left. I am thinking of getting another slide and barrel to change out the ports. It is also in serious need of being deburred. The edges of this little pistol are razor sharp.

To start 2005, I picked up this GI on January 2nd (store was closed on the 1st :) )

After putting a few hundred rounds downrange stock, I started my first "project".

Here's a very mild rework of a GI.

What I did:
Ed Brown slide stop
Ed Brown extractor
Ed Brown firing pin and stop
Fitted a new MSH
EMC wide spur hammer
EGW sear
Ed Brown disconnector
Real steel thumb safety
Kings bushing
Kings #104 front sight
Yost-Bonitz retro rear sight
Greider medium length trigger
VZ canvas grips
Wolff Spring Kit
Wilsons sear spring

http://www.suckasstheatre.com/gunpics/GI1.jpg

The EMC hammer has been bobbed, but I like the looks and profile a lot.
http://www.suckasstheatre.com/gunpics/giemc.jpg

The Kings bushing is nice and thick. Should keep the crown protected.
http://www.suckasstheatre.com/gunpics/gikingsbushing.jpg

I really had fun with this. I know it's mild and not involved, but I'm pleased with the results. It was neat knowing I tackled the project myself. Also was a good reminder as to why we pay gunsmiths what we do sometimes! :)

Back in June of last yeat, I sent the guys at Yost Bonitz my Milspec. I bought the gun in 1994 and shot it a lot. Good gun, but I wanted something more and the 1* package offered by Ted Yost seemed like a winner. Problem was that I wanted Heinie Straight 8 sights and not Novaks so my pistol would not qualify for the 1* logo. I got the Yost "Y" instead. :)

I also asked the guys to replace all MIM parts with real steel while they were in there.

Here are the results:

Thanks. The Cat tractors in the background do add an air of "expertise".

It's now my official "going to the desert" gun when I go off roading and camping.

It's eaten up just over 500 rounds now. No hiccups. All the safeties work. It shoots where I point it. I guess I did things right.

Best of all I really had fun doing it.

Cylinder & Slide tactical trigger pull set
CMC thumb safety
CMC tactical mag catch

Unfortunately, one of the grip screws broke in half when i was putting it all together. Part of the screw is still inside. Any suggestions on the safest way to take the remaining screw without messing up the threads? Thanks.

Tom

I thought I was the only one, too. It wasn't until I posted a message about wanting those grips on the other 1911 forum and found someone willing to sell me these grips that all these people started coming out of the woodwork saying how much they like or want these grips, too.

I worried that these grips would make my Mil-Spec look too "G.I.", but now that I see them on the gun I don't worry about that any longer. Plus these grips are slightly thicker than the "stock" Mil-Spec grips, made of wood not plastic, and (in my opinion) are more comfortable and give a more secure hold.

Hi new member here. Thought I'd post a pic of my baby, a Springfield Mil-spec. This is the first firearm I've owned personally and it just had to be a 1911. I bought her about a month ago and put about 400 rounds downrange with no problems so far. Ive been reading this wonderful site for a couple months now, trying to grab as much 1911 knowledge as i can. This forum is where i decided to go with the springfield and shes a great little gun. I only wish I had one of these in the desert for a sidearm instead of that beat up Beretta 92 :D http://img212.exs.cx/img212/5724/p10106077qv.jpg

Very sweet, 11-B. Especially the grips. Were those on the gun when you bought it, or something you added later?

The grips were my idea, the only thing ive done to it so far since i bought it brand new. I love the look of rosewood. I plan on replacing the MIM parts with higher quality ones as my knowledge of 1911s improves or if i can find a good gunsmith in my area. I cant wait to start playing around with this thing :)

Sorry about the crappy photo, but my Mil Spec, Valentine, just got back from SA Custom Shop, and I had to have a hasty visual aid to accompany my gloating. This baby is far, far nicer than this image can reveal. For those who wonder whether it's worth it to start with a base gun and have it customized, rather than paying for an optioned limited production or semi custom gun... Wonder no more. IMO, there is no better way to go.

I wish I knew where it came from...
I bought the gun used, and it already had the trigger and Hogue grips on it.
The trigger is made of plastic or carbon fiber.

The work that I've done so far:
S&A magwell blended and polished
S&A Beavertail
Nowlin Sear, Hammer, Sear Spring and Mainspring
Ergo Grips
Greider trigger, currently sitting at 4 lb pull

Work Remaining:
Checker Frontstrap to 25 lpi
Install a Bo-mar rear sight (I'm looking at my options for the front sight)
Eventually install a Kart barrel (when I have money again :D )
Refinish with Norrell Moly Resin (I'm thinking about a gentle Gray frame and Gray-Black slide for a mild two-tone look)

Well, after a long weekend, my Mil-Spec came home from Springfield’s Custom Shop on Monday. She originally went in for a repair due to a mis fitted barrel bushing, and “while they were at it” I had them install some parts and do some machining. What I ended up with is a Mil-Spec that is all my own, exactly the way I wanted it. Oh, and a sweet four and a half pound trigger.

Parts and work done:
Alumagrips for Magwell with Springfield logo by GunGrips.net (http://www.gungrips.net)
Cylinder & Slide Tactical II trigger kit (hammer, sear, disconnector, and sear spring, installed by Custom Shop)
Cylinder & Slide Titanium hammer strut
Ed Brown 40 LPI checkered magazine release, with a Dawson Precision hex head magazine catch lock.
Ed Brown Firing Pin Stop and Recoil Spring Plug
Ed Brown extended thumb safety
Heinie SlantPro sights, trijicon front and plain black rear (dovetails cut and sights installed by Custom Shop)
King’s extended slide stop
Short Videki Design trigger with the serrations filed off
Smith & Alexander .220 radius grip safety (grip frame cut, blended and refinished bu Custom Shop)
Smith & Alexander Magwell, 20 LPI checkered, flat
Wilson Combat Bullet Proof ™ Extractor
Wilson Combat stainless pin set and hex head grip screws
20 LPI checkering on the front strap (Machine checkered by Custom Shop)

The stippling job I did because I was anxious and had to wait the weekend. Not a 1911, my Kahr MK-9

And after a trip to the range? 450 rounds, one failure to feed (due largely in part to my not fully inserting the magazine) and I tore out the ten ring on the four targets I had. well, after I tightened the set screw on the Heinie sights. (as my groups drifted towards the left) Well, after exchanging e-mail with Ted Yost about his lanyard modification to the MSH, my Smith & Alexander Magwell is off to his shop. I realize that I could have spent ten dollars extra and gotten a lanyard when I ordered the part originally, but I don’t like the loops that stick out on non-GI guns. Besides, $55.00 is cheap to say that my gun has custom work done by Yost-Bonitz.

Sorry for the long first post.

Rebel,

Beutiful Milspec...If you don't mind my asking what was the total price from springfield for the custom work?

theArmedRebel
24th March 2005, 20:08
Probably too much, but she's so beautiful. Not included in that price are the following parts: the magwell, beavertail, slide stop, thumb safety, grips and the Cylinder & Slide Tactical II kit. I had a 10% discount coupon from Brownells (from the SHOT show) so that helped, but not much. I'm in to her for about $1200.00, so it would have been cheaper to upgrade a Loaded or something. But I didn't want forward cocking serrations and I was planning to do the work over a longer period of time, and more of it myself. But she was already at Springfield...

Hello theArmedRebel. I'm new to the forum. I'd like to ask how you like that repro holster. How do you wear it? How do you dress to conceal it? Would it be practical to wear it underneath an oversize tee-shirt or would a button-up be preferred? I realize some of these answers I must find out for myself, nevertheless I am interested in your experience with this holster. I'm considering one myself. Thanks in advance, peanutlover.

theArmedRebel
26th March 2005, 02:12
The earlier version. It's comfortable, but I've never considered wearing it for concealment. It was a Christmas gift. I'm a History major at UNLV and generally into WWII thru Vietnam, which is why I bought the Springfield in the first place. That, and I couldn't afford the coin for the Colt WWII reproduction for an "obsolete" firearm. :o Now I have three and am itching for number four. :D
I would think the M7 would be a better carry choice, only because the M3 isn't as stable with only the one strap. Personally, I carry either my G26, Kahr MK-9 or my 640 S&W, IWB or front pocket carry. But I'm also thinking 1911 number five will be a Commander, maybe even an actual Colt, but probably not.

theArmedRebel, did you send the parts to SA's Custom Shop you had picked up to be put on to not void the warranty? Just asking because I am thinking of getting some parts as time goes by and having the custom shop do it so the warranty will live on.

Scott

theArmedRebel
28th March 2005, 19:38
But since it was already at Springfield, I figured I would have them do it. The warranty played a part in that decision. I was going to send the slide off to Heinie for the sight upgrade, but the rest I was going to do myself. I figured I might have to see a gunsmith about the refinishing issues, but that was it. Then I started thinking about the front strap and whether or not I wanted to do stippling myself or checkering. I considered buying a Marvel jig from Brownells and doing it myself, but the time factor (and the fear of screwing it up) led me to have Springfield do it. I cannot even begin to express how nicely it turned out. But right now she is partially disassembled as the MSH?magwell is off at Yost -Bonitz for their MSH/lanyard modification. I will post pics when it comes in.

Springfield MC Operator: Ed Brown slim tactical thumb safety, Wilson V-Grip MSH, Wilson "Slim-Line" grips, Wilson "Custom-Tune" spring package.

This is my new one, Springfield Lightweight Micro-Compact Bi-Tone (PX9801L). At a mere 24oz, it's a pleasure to carry; I was carrying the 42oz MC Op.

Sorry about the crappy picture. The micro-compact is supporting a "beater" wilson safety for the time being, as I ripped off the Springfield ambi-safety ASAP so it wouldn't scratch the other side of the frame (like it did to my Operator ). It will soon be replaced by an Ed Brown slim tactical safety (same as on the Operator).

I remove them all the time. Those types of ambi safeties are assembled with a "tongue" on one side of the safety pivot pin fitting into a snug "groove" on the other side of the safety. The safeties on those three guns come apart with just a little force, but some that are tight, or new, require a little prying persuasion with a thin bladed knife (or something similar) and a CC to protect the finish beneath.

Those particular safeties are all Wilson and have stood up quite well through lots of disassemble/reassemble cycles and I have no complaints about them. Some folks have trouble with the tongue 'n groove getting loose, or even breaking off over time.

That said, I'm not the biggest ambi safety guy on the planet and all my other 1911's are fitted with extended, single-side safeties.

Yes, from the factory. Almost any 1911 grips you can buy these days come with the option for being pre-inleted for an ambi-safety.

The Aluma grips are great. They don't snag on clothing since I ccw. The checkering is smooth, yet grip does not slip. They added a tad bit of weight to the gun as opposed to the wood grips. I actually shoot better with the added weight. I am thoroughly satisfied with the fit and finish. They bolted on in a couple of minutes. I highly recommend them. :D
Thx for the compliment on the gun as well. :)

Changed my grips out to a pair of Kimbers that I got cheap. Sanded them down a little bit so they didn't dig into my palms and refinished them...

I second that recommendation. I put a set on my Black Stainless Loaded. I have the half-checkered ones (on the front but not the rear) and they are great. The customer service is first rate. Before they shipped I got a call to see it I need a set of screws and bushings.

I'm really glad I took time to view this thread before I invited my 9 year-old daughter to view the photos.

I had thought she might find it interesting to see some of the photos of everyone's Springfields since she really likes her dad's and my guns. Imagine my surprise to find that some of the photos aren't fit for my eyes let alone those of my darling daughter.

You'll have to use an image editing program, like Photoshop or Paintshop, before uploading the picture to size it down a bit. 800x600 is about perfect for this board.

Brownells should have them. I believe the ones that I have are Ed Brown. While there, you may also want to pick up a set of Wolff springs for the mag release. They come in one pack, several different weights.

Hello all. First post here in the forums. I've been lurking for a while, reading and gleaning lots of great info. from y'all. Here's a picture of the boys - top is my PX9151L I recently picked up from a neighbor, lower is my favorite CCW, a PB9517 MilSpec. Not much data around on the 9517 - it's an UltraCompact upper on a V10 Champion frame. If anybody arounmd has more scoop on why they made these, then discontinued them, please feel free to edify me. This configuration is great for my style - it gives me shorter upper for concealment, but full size grip, which being a fellow that shops in the Big and Tall section I don't have much trouble with (CCW) concealment. It also lets me share mags between the two.
Anyway - great site, great forums, looking forward to chatting with y'all much more.

Well sir,

I replaced trigger with a one piece USGI

Replaced thumb safety and slide stop with USGI parts.

Replaced the ILS mainspring housing with a Colt USGI, (later changed that out with checkered Smith & Alexander - lanyard loop and use the Colt MSH on a 1991A1 Colt)

Replaced the baby poop brown stocks with a set of late W.W.II Ithaca's, made by Keyes Fiber Co.
http://www.simpsonltdtestsite.com/index.php?cPath=60_88&osCsid=72794c4603a1bcb8ec60787bdb7fad4c

And I replaced the internals with Colt parts.

I'm not saying you should do anything like this, the Springer GI is a nice lookin' piece the way it is.

I just happen to have the parts laying around and time on my hands. ;)

I just picked this up today (for a very reasonable price I believe). Half of me thinks it is ugly....the other half had a LOT of fun putting 300 rounds through it this afternoon, man this thing shoots well. It has a Wilson Barrel, grips, Ed Brown beavertail, the list goes on. It sure beats the heck out of the Armscor I owned for a very long 3 weeks (I know, I know).

Shoot first, mofify later, when you know what needs to be modified for your particular pistol and you. Don't start taking parts out and replacing them, for no reason, just because someone else did.

Here are the mods:
Wilson custom tune spring kit.
Chip Mccormick low-mount rear site.
Wilsom Combat trigger.
Wilson drop in beaver tail.
Smith&Alexander flat checkered mainspring housing.
Duracoat Matte black and OD finish.

Thanks. That target was shot from about 10 yards. I just started shooting IPSC and man is that an eye opener. I can hit where I aim it just takes me way too long to do it. The target in the photo is from my regular indoor range, and it's one of my better targets. My IPSC targets don't look anything like that. To my credit, that's a completely stock, mil-spec. Nothing fancy there, but it shoot's pretty straight if you can find the front sight.

I notice the frame has an NM serial, mated to a Mil-Spec slide, but with GI sights. Did you buy it that way new, or did somebody somewhere replace them?

I bought it used a few years ago. But I was pretty sure when I got it that everything was as it was from the factory. I don't think the previous owner changed anything. I've since called Springfield and found out that the gun was made here in the US back in 1988, not Brazil. I'm not sure if all Springers were made here then or if just certain models. As for the GI sights I'm guessing the older Mil-Specs came that way. If that was somones mod to the gun, it's a pretty odd one.

Every now and then I consider sending it back to Springfield and having it tricked out. But I find myself liking the fact that it's so simple and works so well for me. I think I'm going to have to pick up a new Mil-Spec to have worked on and keep this one as is.

Born & Raised in Detroit so I had to have the Red Wings logo.

V10 is 45 ACP and is a hoot to shoot. Shoots POA at 17-20ft. The muzzle flash is quite impressive (especially in low light) if you're watching someone shoot but to tell you the truth I really don't notice the flash when I'm shooting. The ported barrel also makes it a tad louder than a standard 45.

This done shot after:

200 rounds fired (Wolf {steel} & Independence {brass}) straight out of the blue case (all FLAWLESS btw.)

Complete detail strip and clean to eliminate factory over-oil.

Reassembly and 10 round function check.

Do I have plans? Oh...you bet'cha. S&A magwell/MSH and .220 beavertail, CMC drop-in rear sight, Wilson internals, and a sweet STI carbon fiber/Titanium trigger...if I can still find one. (check out my thread in the parts/to buy section if you know what I'm lookin' for.) Some etched alumagrips will find there way on there...and someday, maybe, a nice roguard finish for the frame and slide.

But, for the moment, it's sweet as it is, especially considering the $$ invested! This value can't be beat if you either want just a damn good range pounder, or as a base to build upon. I gotta say, the slide to frame fit is exceptional...way beyond my expectations. Imbel of Brazil has got it goin' on!

Anyway...there's my sense x2 (now that I'm finally satisfied that I can post pics the right way.) Still got a couple of hundred rounds to put thru for break-in, but I have little doubt that she'll swallow 'em all & spit 'em out just fine. Comments or suggestions always welcome.

Great choice on the grips Riogrande481. They really complement the pistol.

I just got my baby back not to long ago from the Springfield Custom Shop. They did a sweet trigger job that was worth the wait.

Can you tell me where you purchased those grips? I have seen a couple of them on guns, they look great and would like to get a set for mine.

Thanks

Reddog,

I got them from www.sportsmansguide.com

They run just under $20. They are not made for an ambidextrous saftey but a few seconds with a dremel made them work.
