I just bought a Wolff replacement recoil spring and upon opening the package I see one end is finished or flat while the other end looks like it was just cut off .

The one that came with my RIA had both ends finished flat.
Did I get ripped off? I'm new to the site but not the weapon and this is the first time I ever bought a recoil spring.

Is this normal?

No rip-off. All Wolff springs(with a couple exceptions) come with the last coil cut. Make sure the finished end goes toward the spring guide.

Your RIA spring is the exception. Every recoil spring I've ever used has a "flat" end to indicate that it goes against the guide rod and a clipped end to indicate that it goes into the plunger.

The second most common mistake among newbies, after the "idiot scratch" is to put recoil springs in backwards.

Ping Ping is right. I haven't even seen a spring for the 1911 which is flat on both ends!

I've seen a few springs with flats on both ends, but they were on cheaper made guns.

Your right, I didn't pay very much for my used RIA. I have found I can group way better with the RIA than with my Colt 1991A1.
The only extra is that the RIA has a Pidacki trigger on it.

I am told it's an inexpensive POS but it works for me.
Guess I got lucky.

Gunny...

ANY mil-spec 1911 is, at WORST, a GREAT place to start. It sounds like you got lucky and out cheap by getting something REAL usable, at a bargain. Not many of us can say THAT!

You have a platform there that you can do a lot with. ENJOY IT!
Well done!
