I am looking to purchase a new 1911 and have been considering the New Colt 70 Series. I know little about the components of the pistol.
Who actually makes the frames are slides?
Where are they made?
What is the over all quality of fit and finish of this pistol?

Go directly to the Rampant Horse's mouth, call Colt; 800-962-2658.

What is the over all quality of fit and finish of this pistol?
Excellent, in my opinion.

The Colt series 70 reproduction is, in my opinion, the finest 1911 pistol
on the market today.

They do not have the series 80 firing pin safety and are the essence
of the term, Colt .45 Caliber Automatic Pistol. They are the real thing, NOT a
copy.

The fit and finish of the current batch, is the best Colt has produced in
many years.

Recently, a few copies have had some minor cosmetic problems. Do a
search on, off center recoil spring tunnels and leaning hammers, so you
can spot these problems before purchase.

Only a few of the total pistols produced have had these cosmetic flaws.
So don't let a few less than perfect copies affect your decision. These
flaws are easy to spot, then you can pass on that individual example.

Definately take a close look at the Colt Series 70. A tremendous amount
of info is right here on this website. Do a search.

Get a good one and it will become a cherished possession.

I concur with the Captain.

I also agree. A fine example of the best fighting pistol ever made. Not to mention they are really made by Colt in Hartford Conn. not just imported and rollmarked.

Gimme the blue one with a Commander hammer and grip safety!

Never mind, I'll take it as it is, what's some hammer bite in exchange for shooting this beauty??!!

Rio Vista Slim, why did you have to go and do that? I was about to have a "balanced" household budget here... and you just don't know how bad I want one of those stainless Series 70 re-issues.

I've got one half of the Series 70 re-issue dilema resolved-

http://www2.netdoor.com/~cgoodwin/Gun%20Pics/Colt%2070_SA%20MS%20SS.jpg

And the other half simply must come soon.

Yes, the stainless Springer Mil-Spec is nice... I really like it and it's the "ultimate" Mil-Spec for me... I waited quite some time for this one and pounced upon it when it showed in the gunstore. It's a NM serial number prefix and there's absolutely no Brazil or Imbel markings on it anywere (like my other Springers). I'm a big Springfield fan and I will continue to buy their pistols.

But, still- it ain't a Colt... and it isn't the Colt that I want in a photo with my blued Series 70 re-issue!

Doggoneit, I got to go get my drool towel again. And if I see another WWI Reproduction- the second Colt I want, it will drive me over the edge. I shall not even talk about the third Colt I want.

John
14th December 2006, 10:37
That's a nice Springer and I would also drool over it, if it wasn't for Rio's picture. See the faults? Angled cocking serrations? Lower AND flared ejection port?? No pony???

OKCorral... I am probably in your debt for not posting anymore 1911 pics... and please don't get me started on Pythons. It's bad enough when I see them. Yes, BTW, I do have one and it's not enough. My local gunstore has two on display... another 4" blued like mine and a 6" stainless. It's all I can do to stay away from the place. There's a sinister plot brewing down there to bankrupt me and put me in the poor house. :(

My epithet will likely read…

Here lies Cliff,
He died with Colts a plenty.

Pythons and an Ace,
Oh, the 1911’s were many.

But broke Cliff was, he spent it all on guns,
Pity his children; there wasn't a penny to be found.

He spent his paychecks with glee, then borrowed here and there,
The money lenders he owed, they were all around.

The undertaker stood firm, “No credit allowed... it's cash upfront!”,
Alas, his beloved Colts were sold to put him in the ground.

I do not care for the undertaker (let those left behind to worry about that), but my Colt (soon to be replaced by my Talon) and the Springfield will go to my kids, and I'll warn them about my curse if they ever dare to sell them.

Some years ago, when the going was really tough, and a lot of things had to be sold, three things I never thought about selling: The Colt, the Springfield and my Rolex (a graduation gift from my parents, when I got my University degree).

It is a fine pistol well deserving of both the Colt name and your choice to make it first.

How is reliability and accuracy?

crazyhorse,
My apologies for being so tardy in my response.
The two new Series 70 pistols pictured on page one of this thread are very accurate firearms. They DO have the better sights that Colt is using these days, as opposed to the old G.I. sights of the original Series 70 pistols. My eyes have admittedly gotten weaker in the 25 plus years since I owned my last original Series 70, but my marksmanship has improved. I would say that the two factors even out. In addition, the trigger pull on both guns averages right at four pounds. While I admit that there is a little creep in the trigger pull, both of mine break cleanly.

I have also been more than pleased with the reliability of my pistols. Both have been fed just about every type of commercially available hollow point ammunition, with no failures at all.

There's something about the Gov't model that I really like. My dilema is in making the choice between blue and stainless. I truly don't want 2 of them at this time.
I prefer blue, but if I did anything like open the ejection port (does it need it?) the stainless wouldn't require a refinish like the blue one would.
Decisions decisions.............;)

Good question, Lynnie!
I thought that my blue one might need it, at first, because I detected a few cartridge casings with the "usual suspect"ed dented case mouths. I even asked Tuner about it in a thread in the Gunsmithing section of the forum. As it turned out, the problem went away, after a few rounds, and has never resurfaced again. The stainless model never dented case mouths.

Get the blue one. Although I really like my stainless model, my blued Series 70 (new production) is one of my all-time favorites. :D
