has anyone ever made a magazine release for the 1911 for us left-handed folks? I just got a ambi safety put on one of my 2 colt 1911s (see post in colt forum I posted in late nov/early dec). it helped a bunch, but it still is awkward to drop the mag. I find myself looking at the springfield xd and wishing......... it just seems like this would have been addressed sometime w/the 1911 , even if it meant modifying mags (like a hole in the rt side). comments anyone? Ideas? Any other southpaws found a technique to deal w/ mag change quicker? TIA.......Frank

S&A makes an ambi mag release. Contact them or see it on brownells web site or get a catalog............get a catalog anyway, you'll not regret it.

Not sure if they have a site or not. But you can check the brownells web site for the part.

Another issue of concert to lefties, is the slide stop. Some years ago, a company called Bushmaster (or something to that extent) used to make a slide stop which went on the right side of the frame (I've only seen pictures of that, so don't ask for details). Anyone has any idea of someone else making these gizmos?
I receive questions about a fully-left-hand 1911, and this is one issue I am not sure about.

Dlask out of Canada makes lefty 1911s. The S&A ambi mag release is high (money-wise), but Brownells had an ambi mag release made by Cylinder and Slide that was a whole lot cheaper but I don't know if they still carry it.

Check out the new issue of american handgunner. Theirs a short article in one of the departments about a mag release conversion that moves the button to the other side of the grip frame. It's really designed so that speed shooters can make a fast mag change without turning the pistol to the side to strike the release but I bet it would work great for a lefty. It's pretty cheap too!

A lefty has it better than us right handers! Just use your trigger finger! I can't reach the mag release with my short thumbs and considered putting an ambi on the gun so I could use my trigger finger rather than having to flip the gun up in my hand every time. The hundred bucks turned me off plus most holsters won't clear an ambi. As for a slide release, if you shoot two handed, just use your right hand to pull the slide back a touch and release it. Anyone got a thumb streatcher? (when I catch it in the ejection port clearing a round, it swells up, but it doesn't get any longer!) 44 Man
