Hello,

New to 1911's, just bought a used Kimber Compact CDP and found that although just a little over 1/4" longer barrel than my H&K P2000 .40, I shot much better. This was my first experience shooting a .45 and I expected it to be much harder to handle yet I found it easier and more precise.

Now I'm looking at the Gunsite Editions of Colt, specifically the 4.25" officers version. Could anyone tell me what gun the Gunsite is built around? As in the new S&W Gunsite is built on thier SW1911PD platform. I am considering the S&W too but found much bigger fans of the Colt. I'm thinking the XSE are what Colt uses to build the Gunsite, but the bullet capacity is less.

I like the alloy frame and compact size for a CCW. But if I can't get the Gunsite (too much $$$ or availability issues) I'd still like to own a Colt. Any other place to find the Gunsite Colt besides Gunsite or gunsamerica.com? Hope this makes sense.

Thanks in advance for any help. Happy Holidays!

Rob

Mine is a liteweight commander frame, I shot it against my fullsize Kimber yesterday and was terribly unimpressed with it, the Kimber shot about 2 inches low at 7 yards, but about a 2" group, the Gunsite Colt shot all over the target, one group of 3 low and left though, maybe with alot more shooting and break in time it would improve, my Kimber seems to be getting more accurate the more I shoot it !

Or maybe it's you who are getting used to the gun and your accuracy improves. :)

It seems to take a magazine or two for me to get used to shooting different pstols , maybe just getting familiar with it will be the ticket

The compact Colt Gunsite is based on the CCO - Concealed Carry Officers - which is something of a hybrid, combining the slide/barrel assembly of the Commander with the shortened grip frame of the now-discontinued Officers ACP. The CCO was a regular catalog item in the late '90s, but was discontinued at the same time as the OACP, Colt apparently feeling that the Commander and the Defender sufficiently covered the compact end of the market. Colts are always in short supply, and if you can find one on the internet sites, you are probably ahead of the game.

I wondered about that if the frame was an officers model, the mags only hold 6 rounds ! Can I get or use higher capacity mags in it ?

Standard magazines will work in the compact frame but it will stick out of the grip a little.

Since you just acquired the Colt, get some range time with the Gunsite CCO to get used to the smaller frame......BTW, you can get 7 round officer sized mags.....

Thanks for the info guys! I have found one that's still available so I might snatch that up. Seems like Colt has a solid reputation amongst the 1911 family and could easily be worked on/upgraded if needed to.
