View Full Version : Ordered 38 Super Govt Model - How many mags with it?

I decided to go with the Stainless 38 Super Government and ordered one from Bud's. (I was looking at the Special Combat Govt, but decided that I to get the standard model, replacement grips, and reloading dies instead and have a few $ left over)

My question is - does the gun come with one or two magazines?

Thanks again to the group - I wouldn't have looked at Colt again were it not for the feedback I received on how good their product is now. I looked at a standard Government .38 Super and a M1991 .45 in different gunstores, and both were very tight and well-made. Compared to the '84 vintage Combat Elite I used to have, both new ones I handled were noticeably tighter. I can't wait to try my new one when it arrives.

I wouldn't feel confident without having at least 5 mags for the pistol. Of course, if you have other pistols, same caliber, you can share.

You got it. It should be in Monday or Tuesday.

Thanks,

Thanks John

BTW - I've been looking for spare magazines online. Any preference for brand?

Mainly I've been looking at Colt, Mec-Gar, and Wilson's

I got two mags with the gun, then bought three Mec-Gars, which are all but identical to the "factory" mags (which are likely also made by Mec-Gar or Metalform).

I have no experience with .38 Super mags, so I can't say. But my MecGars in either 9mm or .45 ACP have been exceptionally reliable so far (more than 10 years).

In 9mm, Springfield has some nice mags, but I am not sure about their .38 Super ones.

Post pics when you get them and give us a range report when you take her out. Congratulations on your new pistol!

Wilson and McCormick make 38 super magazines. Super magazines aren't as easily found as 45's, but they're out there.

You'll get two mags with your Govt 38 Super Model: I have one, myself. They're very good magazines.

As others including our El Jefe John, have said... .38 Super isn't as common as some of the other calibers, but, it's getting there. I love mine. I don't have any Metalforms--for my .45s I have Springers, an OEM USGI Colt's, a Novaks, and two Wilson Combats. They've all been really good, just like the ones that came with my 38 Super Model.

John knows a lot about our platform, as do many others; if those Colt's of mine are Metalform, they are excellent. I love them. I hope my O1991 Govt in .45 has as good a mag, as my 38 Super Model!

Look at the base of your Colt magazines Mick, they should have a letter stamped on them.

M=Metalform
C=CheckMate
O=OK Industries
S=Stainless
G=?

M... so, that settles that: I DO have two Metalforms! They're so far very good, seem to be well made. What does the "8" directly below the "M" signify, sir? The fact that they're 8-round capacity?

Correct sir.

Correct sir.

They're beautiful magazines. When I first got my 38 Super Model, I fell in love with them: the weight, the solidness of them, the engraving on the plates on the bottom... they feed real well, and they're built like tanks. I so hope my O1991 has the Metalform! From your response here, sounds like Colt's gets theirs from several vendors...

Overall, as much as I love my Rock, my Taurus, my two Rugers, and my two Springers... the quality of both my USGI .45 and my 38 Super Model, are just amazing. They're SOLID. Even the magazines, although my USGI's original is pretty battered, but I love it 'cause it's original. It still works, at any rate, despite it not wanting to drop free when empty. I'm thinking next year, when I get my O1991 paid off and have it, to look into some Metalforms for my Rock and my Springers. Actually, the Springers have functioned well, as has the Novaks that came with my Rock, although I was a little leery of it at first... and the Wilsons have also been excellent. But, being a meat and potatoes kinda 1911 guy, I like the 7-round, standard buttplate mag, as opposed to the 8-round, bumper on the Novaks, and the bumper on my Wilson Combats. I know now how to disassemble a standard mil-spec magazine, all it takes is a small punch... and in a civilian situation, 7+1 in .45, or 8+1 in a .38 Super, is plenty.

Thank you for my continuing education, sir. You and yours take care and be safe.

The factory mags that came with my Colt Super hold 9.

My Colt 1991A1 .38S mags hold 9 rounds. You'll get 2 mags with a brand new in box Colt XSE .38S

Right, 9 rounds for the Super (and 9mm I believe). If Mick stated what caliber the mags were for, I overlooked it. Are you fellas 9 round Super mags stamped with an 8?

Hang on y'all... I'm fixin' to load a magazine...

OD*, y'all, YES: My Colt's .38 Super mags, hold NINE rounds. They're both stamped M and 8, along with the Colt's rampant stallion logo and "Colt Super .38 Auto".

Interesting.

So, OD*, appears so, in my case as well. Mine's definitely .38Super. NOW we've got us a discussion going!

Y'all take care and be safe.

I imagine they just use the 8 round base plate, instead of stamping a special base.

Certainly, for the other folks's information, YOU and several others here, know a lot about the 1911. When I fired my 38 Super Government Model, I was loading full mags, racking the slide to chamber one, and firing. If I were to start carrying it, I'd rack one, reload the 9th (total 10 rounds), go to Condition 1 carry with it, 10 rounds total, loaded and locked. A mechanically functional 1911 is physically safe that way in my experience: safe as my Ruger P90 or Taurus PT92AF.

Interesting that Colt's... or Metalform... would use the "8" stamping, on a 9-round magazine, though. Nice little historical/current quirk, I think!
