OK, I called Colt to order a Recoil Spring Cap for my Defender since it got dinged up when my spring failed and slipped between the cap and the recoil spring bushing at the rage a couple of weeks ago. The lady says she only sees a Recoil Spring Plug on the schematic and in her parts database. I tell her that both schematics for the Defender and the Series 80 Govt. model are in my Colt book that came with my Defender and that they are two different parts and that the Defender is a Series 90 pistol. Long story short she sees the same part on the series 80 schematic and insists they are the same part and sends it anyway. I get them, they're wrong, and I call her back and can't get it through her head that they are two different things. I cannot find the actual part number for this thing anywhere so I can give it to her to look up. The only thing I have is the schematic number, which isn't the same as the part number. It is part number 14 in the schematic of the Defender (she sent me #39 from the series 80 schematic). Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks!

Hmmm. Well, I think they have a major problem there with this part. I got that part number, but it is a Spring Plug, not a cap. It is way too big to fit and doesn't look the same; it is obviously for the series 80 Gvt. I'm sure that number is correct, but they have put the plug in the bin where the cap should be I guess. Thanks for confirming my part number.

This number comes from a dealer that sells Colt parts. If you go to the site, none of his drawings show up but the part numbers do. And you might notice that it is called a plug in one reference and a cap in another. Here is the site and the part reference.

ETA: I just talked to Mr Johnson and he does not have that part and you can only get it from Colt. He said the cap-plug is the same thing but that most likely it is a computer error at Colt that keeps telling the lady that this is the right part. :butthead: He said he has had that problem before. The only sure way he knows would be to send the gun to Colt for a part replacement. :(

Yeah, I have talked to them (Colt) on the phone now 3 times. It is a mess. I finally told them I will send them back with a picture of what the part should look like and hopefully it will be right. In talking with them, it sounds like they are lacking a lot in the computer dept. What a pain. Bad thing is I carry this piece on the job as my back-up. It's been a great little companion and I feel naked.
Thanks so much for making that phone call, I really appreciate the help!!

Will do. They close the plant for 2 weeks over Christmas, so hopefully I can beat that and get my part before the first of the year.

Did you send Colt the "smushed" part? Or at least take a picture of it and send that! Just a thought.

Yeah, I can do that. Of what: the damaged part or the part they sent me, just the minor damage?

Ok, here is how this came out. After sending the parts back, I got a phone call from them (Cindy) and they said they confirmed it was a clerical error with mixing up the numbers and they would send me the correct parts ASAP with the intent of getting it before they close down for two weeks due to the holidays. That was on the 18th I believe. I finally got the parts today, the 27th in the mail. Instead of giving me only the two recoil spring caps I originally wanted, they sent TWO (2) ENTIRE assemblies and two new recoil spring bushings as well. In other words, they just gave me drop in assembly parts so I don't have to take it apart and replace the cap alone; as well as a spare. It was a little bit of a hassle, but they made it right, and then some, since the assembly is far more expensive than what I ordered alone. It was pretty quick given it was the Christmas holiday period as well.
Kudos to Colt, and Cindy, for going above and beyond!
