in guns & ammo's 'book of the 1911' bart skelton wrote a review on a kimber 10mm. in the article he made multiple comments about how heavy recoil springs can increase trigger pull weight. now, i feel like i have a pretty good understanding of the way the 1911 works but for the life of me i cannot think of any way the recoil spring will have any impact on trigger pull.

I think he mi-spoke himself... A recoil spring will have no effect on trigger pull, but a MINSPRING will....

Oh... and by the way.... SPOOOOOOOOON!!!!!

Maybe he meant to write main or sear spring but got confused by all those different springy thingies. I'm with you - don't see how they could possibly be related. Tuner'd probably call this a brain **** - unless they are somehow related! And if they are, I'm sure we'll find out soon.

Well...Highly likely that...with his background, and his father's long experience with the 1911...that Bart would know the recoil spring from the mainspring.
But...no. The recoil spring wouldn't have any effect on the trigger pull, and the mainspring would have very little, unless the sear/hammer interface was seriously screwy.

there is no mistaking he was talking about the recoil spring. here is a direct quote from the article:

The 16-pound recoil springs found in the .45 ACP pistols are too light for the 10mm model and would allow the slide to wear much harder on the rest of the gun. Some shooters prefer and even heavier spring than the 18 1/2 pounds, often opting for springs up to 24 pounds, but these heavier recoil springs can often hinder the trigger pull.

he also said:

One of the few complaints I have about the Kimber 10mm was the trigger pull, which is a tad heavier than those of the other stock Kimber pistols I've handled. I attribute the pull to the heavier recoil spring.

this is right up there with the mythbusters stating that a 9mm bullet is larger in diameter than a 38 special cylinder chamber...

Well...Won't be the first time that a published writer was mistaken about the function of the gun. Even Kuhnhausen was a little wide of the mark on a few points. Somebody's probably whispered the truth in his ear by now, and he'll likely correct it in a later publication.
