View Full Version : Dents in bottom of slide rail

Has anybody ever heard of this before? Nobody here has. I have an EB Kobra Carry in all stainless with about 3500 rounds through it. It has developed a small but noticable dimple on the left rear of the slide rail about 1/2" forward of the thumb-safety cut out. A second, much smaller nick has formed about 1/2" behind the takedown notch. These dents are on the bottom of the slide rail and do not show unless the gun is disassembled. The rearmost dent is large enough that it would show slightly except that it comes up in the area where the Kobra scales are and they camoflage it. I never saw the dents for the first 2500 rounds. They were either not there, or so small I didn't notice them.

There are some slight wear marks on the nose of the thumb safety that may have been made by the safety hitting the underslide of the slide. I shoot with my thumb under the safety, but it sits far enough under the safety that I really don't think my thumb is kicking the safety up. Even if it were, I don't think there's enough force there to dent the underside of the slide rail.

Function of the gun is fine so it's purely cosmetic at this point, but the KC is for work and I get funny about having my life depend on something that's showing unusual symptoms.

I called EB and they were very nice about taking the gun back. They had never heard of this either. No pics because the gun is in the FedEx. I just thought about asking the forum.

I've got some experienced 1911 shooters for friends and a great smith in Marianne Carniak. Nobody has ever seen this before.

Does this look familiar ?

It's the slide on my Executive Carry after about 700 rounds. It was also failing to feed/eject with some regularity. Brown said they would "expect to see some wear in this area" and, after I sent it back, said they could not duplicate the FTF/E problems, so they could not correct it. So......I was the proud owner of a $2800.00 paperweight.
I finally sent it off to a private smith, John Harrison out of Atlanta, and he fixed this and everything else that was wrong with the pistol, to the tune of about $650.00.
One of my favorite guns now, but sure soured me on EB.
And please......don't write me back and tell me how great they are.....I am relating my own experience here and I fully understand that a lot of people have never had problems with their Browns.
It's water under the bridge to me now; I've moved on, poorer but wiser.

Thanks for the response. That's my gun plus some random dents between the thumb safety notch and the takedown notch. What caused the problem and what did your smith do to fix it?

How is the gun running now?

What kind of magazines you use, in your Ed Brown?

1 EB seven rounder for carry in the gun because it fits flush with the butt. 6 Wilson 47 8 rounders and 4 Wilson 7 rounders converted to be 8 rounders. All mags seem to work fine.

The dents are caused by the magazine follower which engages the slide stop. There fore, shooting the gun empty will cause the stop to engage the slide notches. I suppose some wear is "normal".

I never seen the dents this pronounced.
I wonder if the mag springs are extra strong, or if the follower is out of spec.
Just my .02

This is the link to the thread after I got the gun back from John:

I am not a gunsmith, nor do I want to be a gunsmith. John is a master of his craft; call him, tell him what is going on, and ask him what he did to Tim's gun. He will know what you are talking about.
Good luck !!!!
