My turnhttp://forum.m1911.org/images/icons/icon10.gif
1.I have been considering building(modifying) a 1911 to 9mm for a beater/plinker because ammo is so much cheaper and I dont want to have to buy a 900+$ kimber/Springfield etc. to knock around the boonies with.
2. I have NEVER held a 38 super or a 38 super cartridgehttp://forum.m1911.org/images/icons/icon11.gif

Now my questions
Ive heard RIA makes a 38 super ,do they make a 9mm?
If not, would it be just a barrel/spring swap to convert to 9mm or would I need a boatload of other mods, like new mags, ejector, etc etc ?
Im trying to see if a RIA w/mods would be enough cheaper to make it worth the effort or just give up on the 1911 9mm.http://forum.m1911.org/images/icons/icon15.gif

The slide is the same, the ejector is the same. Only the barrel differs, and the recoil spring, depending on the initial spring weight. Magazines, I would advise to get the 9mm ones, although I've heard that the .38 Super mags can be used for 9mm. Never tried that though, mine is a 9mm so the mags are 9mm too.

Where in Idaho?
I live in Boise and while a couple of shops say they may be able to get one nobody seems to stock RIA up here anywhere, which I think is strange considering armscor's warehouse is in Nevada arent they??????

Scooter - Impact Guns in Boise (in the old Shooting World building) stocks Rock Island. That's the good news. I bought mine there a couple weeks ago. The bad news is that I didn't see any .38 super models there. But they might be able to help you.

If you haven't been there since the new ownership, you need to check it out anyway! :D

John!! Are you becoming a Yugo dealer now?
I'm not familiar with any shops in Boise. I was thinking if you were near Twin maybe Reds Trading Post could help you out.

Scooter, as you are probably aware: there is a slight difference in the diameter of the base of the cartridge - .406 for 38 Super and .391 for the 9mm Luger. Therefore, you might have to make a slight adjustment to the extractor.

I think it is a novel idea, but unless you already have the 9mm barrel and magazines, you are going to have to buy them as well as a new recoil spring (the 9mm Luger has slightly less muzzle energy) Keep in mind that you already paid for the 38 Super barrel and magazines that were in the gun when you bought it.

I assume that you have enough gunsmith capabilities to fit the barrel to the slide?

Personally, having never thought of your idea, I bought a 9mm Kimber and the STI TargetMaster in 9mm. The STI was a little more expensive, but is actually my best 1911, and I have some that cost nearly twice as much.
