View Full Version : Ignition parts kit installation

I have installed an EGW ignition parts kit in a Springfield SS Mil-spec. I thought that it would install without having to change anything. Wrong! The hammer will not clear the stock grip safety. Has anyone installed one of these kits on a Springer? Did you have to alter the original grip safety. If a Smith and Alexander .220 degree beavertail was installed, would this hammer clear it? The pistol actually belongs to a friend of mine because if it was mine I would have the beavertail already installed (big fat hands :) ). I think he would really not like to cut the frame for a beavertail, so I guess that leaves altering the stock grip safety, right? Does anybody know of a drop in beavertail for the .220 Springers? I might also mention that he really likes the new parts. The original trigger pull was over six and a half pounds with a mile of creep. The EGW kit is just under five pounds and really crisp. He loves it, so now we just got to get the grip safety issue resolved and blast away! As usual, any and all help is greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays to all! Greg

You can take the factory tang safety and notch it were the hammer is hitting.
I use a paded vice to hold the part and the largest Dremel drum to sand it into a U notch.

Or find an old Commander grip safety, with the notch already milled on its top surface.

T-TAC Thanks, that's probably how it will be done. Was thinking of using the bench grinder to sort of form the grip safety back, but the sanding barrel sounds like it will work great. I guess it shouldn't be too difficult to find spare grip safetys if it doesn't look like he wants.

John Now that sounds like a really good idea! I was thinking of the difference of the .220 radius of the Springfield compared to the Colts, but with the stock grip safety (not beavertail) it should look OK. To find a commander grip safety in stainless now, Hmmmmm, back to Brownells! Thanks for your input, Greg

OK John, just went through my parts pile and found the stock grip safety off of my Commander and guess what, fits and looks perfect (except it's parkerized). Why I couldn't think of that myself I don't know. Thanks again. Greg
