Hello,
I am looking for some recommendations from users of this forum on shops to use. I'm in need of a shop that can do both top notch gunsmith work on the 1911 and machine some custom parts, in relatively small batches.
I'm located in Houston, TX but could ship anywhere in USA. Do any gunsmiths come to mind that have provided you with great quality work at a reasonable price?
Thanks!

Dave Berryhill of Berryhill Custom Guns in Aldyne. About 300 miles from Houston.

George Smith and EGW get my vote... and all future work I might have. The work they did on my GSR Revolution was perfect... I would trust them to do everything... up to and including a full custom build.
George is a sponsor of this site... check him out!!!!!

Thank you all, I've already contacted EGW for quotes, and will get in touch with the other two mentioned. Any others please let me know!

1911Tuner,
Dave Berryhill must be good because he is not accepting any new work right now and is backlogged! Any other places come to mind? Especially those that could handle a higher volume?
Thanks!

Dunno. All the really good smiths are backed up to the wall, but if you ask around and get some reports, you may find a bit of local talent that can do good work. Just my 2% of a buck, Berryhill is worth the wait. If you can stand to ship out of state, George Smith at Evolution Gun Works doesn't take a back seat to anybody. Closer to home would be Arizona. Lotta good wrenches in Arizona. Yost-Bonitz and Rogers Precision...but expect a backlog from those guys too.

Edited to add: I'm not sure what volume you're thinking of, but give Ed a call or email, he's a super nice guy.

I hate to jump in late but look on the internet for D R Middlebrooks of Sury Va, He is a world champion shooter and has built alot of winning guns for alot of other top line shooters. His only problem is time. He runs a shooting school which takes up his shop time I know for a fact he is running 9 months+ for a full house gun build right now.

Bob Rodgers does nice 1911 work ... actually 1911s are all he does. As to the machining of custom parts you mentioned, I'm not sure what his capabilities are, but he's definitely worth a call.
He's a great guy and really nice to talk with. Tell him Alan in Little Rock told you to "rattle his cage!" ;)
