View Full Version : Loose barrel link pin

The barrel link pin of my M1911 has become loose and frequently falls out when the barrel is removed, which of course in turn causes the barrel link to fall out. As this is a new development it would appear to me that the pin is perhaps designed for a tight "jam-fit" into the barrel appendage (correct name??), and it likely has become loose as a result of wear, although I cannot see why it would move within the barrel appendage as contrasted with barrel link movement.

The weapon received a new barrel in about 1962 when it was accurized. I am assuming, possibly incorrectly, that the link pin and the barrel link were replaced when the barrel was replaced, although I cannot confirm that. I have fired no more than about 3000 rounds since then, about 1500 of those in the last few months, as my retirement has permitted me to get back into shooting.

a. Do I assess this situation correctly? I do not pretend to have the intimate knowledge of the operation of this fine weapon that I should have.

b. If this needs attention, should I be able to obtain a new link pin which would jam into the barrel appendage tightly?

c. If so, might I get a reference with respect to where I might obtain a link pin and perhaps a link?

d. It would appear to me that this is not a dangerous situation, since there appears little or no room for the pin to move sideways during operation. Am I correct on this?

e. It would appear to me that I should be able to fix this myself if I can indeed obtain a new pin which would jam into the appendage. Should I instead see a gunsmith? I have not done so simply because I live in such a remote location, well away from the civilized world.

Assuming that the M1911 is functioning safely, my major concern here is that I have almost lost the link pin a couple of times while cleaning the weapon. If relevant, BTW, I do not have a practice of removing the link pin when cleaning the weapon, which could of course create wear on the pin.

Thank you in advance for any assistance which might be offered. I did try using “Search,” but that is yet another area in which I am not an expert.

Brownells (www.brownells.com) sells an oversized link pin which might be enough larger to solve the problem. If it doesn't, or if you don't want to but it, the ends of the pin can be staked with a sharp punch to expend them just enough to hold the pin in place.

Hi

Take a real close look at the barrel lugs to be sure that there are no cracks or missing chunks. It's a rare thing to have happen, but it's worth taking a look at.
