Today, I noticed that my RIA is showing what looks like brass smudges on the outside of the slide just to the rear of the ejection port. The gun functions perfectly otherwise. Does this indicate a problem?

Probably not. I think that is part of the reason why a lot of 1911's have the opened up ports, flared ports and soemtimes the extended ejectors. However the 1911 seems to have done quite well for itself for many years before these 'improvements' became so common.

Thanks for the reply. I was looking at it again and the smudges are just above the flair?? LIke I said, it functions perfectly - except that the spent brass is spread over a rather wide area from in front of me to behind me. Would that be related to this?

As long as it doesn't mark your forehead, don't worry about it.

I agree with John. The brass that is out in front of you may be getting hit by the slide while that which is behind you may be getting more cleanly ejected.
