I am thinking of replacing the factory sight on a Kimber Eclipse Target 11
with a 3.5 MOA Docter Red Dot Scope and would appreciate input from
anyone that has had experience with this product.

About durability I can't help you. But I can tell you that Docter got out of the shooting optics business and is no longer making that unit. So if you get one, just know that it can't be replaced if broken.
J-Point was the maker of the Optima version but I heard they were inferior to the Docter in construction. But right now, the J-Point sight is all that's left of that design.

...I can tell you that Docter got out of the shooting optics business and is no longer making that unit...Are you sure?
I did not hear anything about this. Here in Germany they are sold and as far as I know, they are still in production...
Where did you get your information from?

The Dr. Optic website is up, and they have not listed anything in stock for at lesast a year....
Searched the web again... Apparently they were out of the game for a while, but are back now... They are a German made sight, and they just lost the US distributor.....Here is one up on Ebay.... http://cgi.ebay.com/Docter-Optic-Red-Dot-Sight-Newest-Generation-doctor_W0QQitemZ280045917612QQihZ018QQcategoryZ66827QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item280045917612

The importer and the company in Germany had a "falling out" and they are no longer imported.
I put one on a TRS. The sight held up fine but...... one day I was shooting and my shots were all over the place. I looked at the sight and it was sitting a little crooked. One of the two screws that hold the mounting plate to the dovetail piece sheared. I put the original sight back on and now the Doctor is mounted on my Mark II. I figure the screws will hold up with the .22 recoil.
As far as the sight goes, it's great. The dot is truly a dot and it's dead on once you get it zero'd.......which is quite a task. All is good with it now and it's seen about 300 rounds from a .45 and over 2000 to date from the .22.
The J-Point has a plastic lens and housing. The Doctor is glass and aluminum which is why the price difference is so great. The mounts are not interchangeable.

I believe Trijicon will be the new importer (or one of them at least).

When the Optima was first made by Tasco, I had one on three different weapons. A Remmington 870 12ga, a Colt Car-15 and a Glock 19. I carried all three on duty in my squad and they all were shot weekly at our teams training days. They all held up. I sold all of them to the officer that replaced me on the team and I wish I had kept atleast one.
I also know that several operators now use the on scoped rifles down range, to the point that a scope mount has been made to put it on the front scope ring on the right side to allow for a 45 degree turn to all a scoped rifle to be used during a CQB situation.
J Point is solid and highly respected and will stand up to anything your pistol can put to it.

I believe the Optima and the J Point are one and the same..... The only thing that has me leaning towards the Docter is the actual optics.... The J Point is a fine sighting device. I just like the fact that 1) the Docter is metal instead of plastic. 2) Docter Optics is a major lense manufacturer, and their unit comes with two layers of glass sandwitching the coating.... I have also had a chance to fire pistols with both, and the Docter is just slightly more clear. There is more "fuzz" in the J Point. (not a whole lot of difference, but it is there...)

While at the S.H.O.T. show I visited the Trijicon booth. They are the new importer for the Docter red dot optic. Trijicon is also building their own similar unit using what I believe to be the same design. I was told the the Docter has an aluminum case and glass lenses. The Trijicon has a polymer case and plastic lenses.
Trijicon has a new ad program with the Docter on top of the 4x32 ACOG and they are selling this combination in large quantities to the military.
I believe that both units are available from Trijicon distributors.
I have a Docter. I like it a lot but wouldn't expect it to be very rugged and the Trijicon sales guy that I spoke to confirmed that both the aluminum and polymer units will suffer if not treated reasonably well.

Thanks Jim,
Now I'll have to keep an eye out. Since I sold all my units I'm needing one to attach to my new shotgun and my scoped AR.
Thanks again.

Steve,
Not to divert you from what you want but you should at least look at the new Aimpoint. This is very small at about 1" wide by 1.5" long and 1.4" tall and 3oz. I think I have the dims correct, read these in the brochure but the papers are packed in the car. Nice piece but pricey, about $500.
Lepold also has a new 1x scope coming. Circle dot reticle, illumination option. About 3" long and an inch in diameter. They showed this on ARs and shotguns.

Somewhere in the last week, I saw a weaver rail that fit the Colt rear dovetail.
From the picture I saw it was about an inch and a half long. I bought an Optima on ebay tonight and would like to refind that rail since the Optima has that mount. Then
later I could move the OPtima to one of my long guns to try out. Anyone seen this rail, or have an idea where to look. I spent hours on ebay and Brownells and haven't found it yet. Thank You
