I just posted this on TFL so if it looks familiar, that's why.

Attached is a picture of the guide rod that came with my brand spanking new S&W 1911. It's the full size model. Now, I'm no expert, but my stainless steel version of this gun, had a guide rod MUCH longer than this. Also, the "head" of the guide rod looks as if it's been cut at an angle some. Should I get on the phone with S&W as soon as I can on Monday and request a new rod, free of charge, or is this normal? Did Smith simply switch from a full length guide rod to a short one? I'm not used to using that short of a guie rod was a bit of a shock. Thanks http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

What model Smith do you have? The base blue model has the short GI guide rod like the original 1911s had, it should be OK but maybe one of the others who are more Knowledgeable about you model can answer for sure. BTW welcome to the forum.

Hi

That's certainly not quite what I would expect to find ....

Any chance we can get a picture of the pistol?

Since Bob Knows S&Ws quite well I would ? that GR also. Try to get a pic of you gun posted so we can get a look at it.

It is the base blue model. I actually have the base SS model and it doesn't look like this. This one actually has the spring plug like an older 1911 would have. The second post in this thread, the one with the link, should take you to the picture. It's linked through TFL, and due to file size limits, I couldn't fit much in to give it some scale.

BTW, are the fire controls and such on the SS model black or blue? I would like to have an ambi safety put on it, but can't find one in black. If a blue ambi safety will match, I'll go for it.

Thanks :)

Hi

I have not torn down a blue SW 1911 so I'm not sure what's inside them.

The controls and piece parts on the stainless version are all blue except for the trigger.

I may be wrong but I have never seen a stainless GI guide rod plug type. They seen to all be blue. My SW1911 SS 108284 came with a full length one piece guide rod. I replaced it with a GI style plug and plunger.

Hi

The blued version of the SW 1911 I saw at the show today had a full length guide rod on it. It was a small show so I only saw the one.

pa_guns,

Do you recall if it was a blued or SS guide rod and spring plug?
I'm debating ordering a FLGR or not. I took the blued one out today and it didn't seem to shoot quite as nice as the SS version, with the same ammo. Not sure if that made a difference or not.

BTW, the finish on the slide has worn more than I expected for only 100 hundred rounds or so to have been put through it. Does anyone recommend using a very slight amount of grease on the sldies to reduce friction?

Thanks

Hi

I didn't look at it for long, but my recollection is that it was a stainless guide rod and plug.

I use Wilson's slide grease and a drop of Slip2000 gun oil. It stays put pretty good and seems to do a decent job.

Thanks all. I think I'm going to take the FLGR from my SS version and put it in this blued one when I go to the range next weekend. We'll see if it makes a difference with regards to accuracy.

Hi

Back 20 years ago everybody knew that you had to have a FLGR to have an accurate pistol. These days the general opinion is that they simply make the pistol look cool.

If you have the basic blue model you have the correct guide rod.

I have not seen a factory guide rod like that.Looks like a full length one that has been cut down.
