Hey folks...
Here are a couple of pics of the Commander I saw on Saturday... and went back and bought today! It's the Lightweight model in 9mm and came with the box, manual & warranty card.
Thanks for everyone's input.
They were asking $400 and wouldn't go any lower... :)
To me it doesn't look like it's been shot much.... the feed ramp shows hardly any wear.... the barrel is nice & bright... no pits or scratches.

WOW! $400 and you were trying to get lower. You are sooooooo lucky that gun wasn't gone when you came back.
I bid $650 on Auction Arms (didn't get it) and found out the guy had $1000 reserve. My hat is off to you and what a beautiful gun. I hope you enjoy it and if you ever think you paid toooooo much drop me a note and I will let you make a nice profit.

Keep up the good work and I'll vote for you!

digi-shots,
I can only echo what everyone else has told you. That is a wonderfully nice Commander, and the fact that it is in 9mm makes it that much more of a find.
Congratulations, and let us know how it shoots. I know that both of my Commanders are the "pride and joy" of my Colt stable, and I'm sure that you will get years of enjoyment from yours. :D

Nice gun at a nice price. I'm not suprised they wouldn't budge from the price.
Hurry up, someone make a police report for theft, you "stole" that one.

Yeah, but the cyberspace variety can only get you if you instant message a 40 year old male cop that claims to be a 14 year old girl for your personal use. Unless you are a congressman that likes underage pages. Seems that there has been quite a bit of that over the last 30 years. You'd think that they would be able to refrain from doing that, they are after all supposed to represent our beast (wow, was that a freudian slip or what?) best interests and comport themselves accordingly.

It's interesting that the box is marked with the barrel length at 4-1/2" rather than what I always thought was the "standard" of 4-1/4" for Commanders.
That, and it being a 9mm Commander is interesting (to me) as all get-out.
Before shooting it much (or at all), you might want to do a LOT of research on this pistol. Who knows, you might have some kind of "ultra" collectable of some sort.

Better yet, move to the wrong area of Northern Illinois and realize that all of your handguns have to live somewhere other than at home with you.

Unfortunately John, that list seems to grow all the time. The enlightened among us keep saving everyone from all those gun-nuts, you know, people like us. They can't seem to give those poor abused and economically deprived felons enough rights and can't seem to find a right of yours that they don't want to curtail. Don't logically point out the flaws in their arguments because if you do you will be called all of their catchphrases that they are so fond of. Bigot, Xenophobe, racist, homophobe, nazi, fascist, reactionary and....player hater! :butthead:

lol yeah. i dunno. there's just something about anything smaller than a .45, esp. in a 1911 that just bothers me. oh well i guess i'm just weird like that. :p

I guess what they say about kids being marked by what they live when they are young, is right. About twenty years ago (or near there), when I was not infected with the 1911 virus, I saw a Colt Combat Commander in a shop, in 9mm. Nothing special, it was parked (or it was not shinny blue, as we see them from the factory today), used and ugly, but it had a certain appeal. Ever since that day, I love Commanders, especially in 9mm.
As I said, nobody is perfect!

Yes, we're planning on going to the range today to try it out. May take a couple of others to shoot... but I really don't like cleaning more than one or two! I've got an 2 older M&P revolvers (S&W) that I haven't shot yet. My husband's got new sights on his "Rock" (plus new glasses!!), so I'm sure he'll be taking that one, and probably the small Para .45
Took the "Commander" apart & cleaned & oiled it yesterday. The barrel is lot nicer than I thought... there's a little bit of scratches on the inside top of the annodized slide rails, so it has been shot before.
I know what everyone means about "only being a 9mm"... oh well.. the price was right and it's a whole lot cheaper to shoot. The finish on this one is really nice... especially, the matte black on top with high polish sides.
The more I look around, though, I don't see too many 9mm Colts.... so, I guess it could be one of those "cult" collectibles. ;) I'm still looking for a Colt .38 Super.
Thanks to all for the nice comments.... I'll post a range report & pics later.

Digi-shots, that is a very nice Commander and a great price. I paid a WHOLE lot more for my 9mm Combat Commander (but don't regret it for a second!). I love to shoot the 9mm just about as much as my .45s and it sure is a lot less expensive. Congratulations!

Hey, Terry. My 9mm Combat Commander (manufactured in 1978) says the exact same thing on the box...but I'm not sure mine is the original box!

$400.00 Dollars for a 1972 9mm Commander with original box and paperwork? For some reason, and I dont know why........but I highly HIGHLY doubt it!
A nice looking pistol though and thats why I own 2 of them!

I'm a little confused as to exactly what you doubt.... do you doubt the gun is real or do you doubt that I paid $400.00...?

I sense that perhaps someone may be a tad envious of your find. I just got a 1973 Satin Nickel Commander for 450.00 and earlier this year I bought a 1985 Officers Model, for 425.00, that had (to my knowledge and the seller and FFL's knowledge as well) never been fired. It was still in the original box, and full of what appeared to be a cosmoline type substance and didn't have a scratch on it, anywhere! There are deals out there, and I think it's mostly dilligence and a little luck to run across them! Enjoy your pistol, knowing that you did get a very very good deal on it!! :)

Thanks for the kind words, Jeff 1124 & Swampthang...
I agree there's good deals (and bad deals) out there... it's funny how we only post the good deals!! :D
Just like the "targets" everyone posts.... I can honestly say, the first target I shot with this Commander is the one I posted (see photo). You don't want to see the others! There were some good groupings, but there were also some wild shots (photos I didn't post!).
I think it takes perservance, a little knowledge, luck and the willingness to part with your hard earned money when you do find that "special" gun. And when you do... you should feel good about it!
