Hi

Actually Jeff has an advantage. Minnesota is more or less equidistant from the great black holes in Texas and North Carolina that all Colts seem to fall into.

LOL, actually this one comes from South Dakota and the Officers Model from Alaska, the XSE from Michigan, the 70 series from MN, the 1991A1 from Tennessee ( I know, dangerously close to No Car.) and the ORM commander from Texas ( it's a big state, musta been smuggled out). So I've been busy spreading my wealth amongst the states. (well, former wealth :( )

I got the Commander today! It looks like it was a daily carry gun due to the wear on the front of the slide and the grip safety. Some clown put a blued extended thumb safety on it that looks oh so tacky. Is there a safe way to buff or shine the nickel finish? It's flaked off in a couple of spots. The internals look good though, looks like the ramp is in good shape and the bore is shiny, the extractor looks new. 1st pic is after a grip change, 2nd pic is with those wrap around grips it came with.

Jeff,
It looks (from your photos) and sounds as if you have gotten a solid, shootable Satin Nickel Combat Commander. In the "dark ages" of the 1970s, the gun-rag writers commented on the beauty, but apparent fragile nature of the satin nickel finish. I owned one, back then, and quickly discovered that the use of Hoppe's #9 was a no-no. Examples that I have seen at various gun shows have run the gamut, from exceptional quality, to atrocious. Of course, the 95% to 99% guns were priced accordingly.

If the finish of your gun is a concern, perhaps the nice folks at Colt could restore it to a new appearance. That call will be yours to make. I personally think that your pistol has a nice look to it, appropriate to its age. The flaking, however, might possibly lead to further finish issues, so some of the experts on the forum should chime in with their opinions.

Lots of talk, but it all boils down to---------CONGRATULATIONS on your Satin Nickel Combat Commander!! :D

Nice, Jeff! I'm kicking myself for not picking up a blue Combat Commander a couple of weeks ago at the gun show. Thought it was too much, but now I WANT IT. I'm sure it's found a new home by now, though. Congratulations on your new Colt!

Colt CS informed me that it was manufactured around 1973. FWIW. I'll have to talk to them about refinishing, don't know if it can be cleaned up some yet. I'm going to check into that as well. Thanks for the compliments! :)

Well, I spent an hour or so with some chrome polish and got a lot of **** off of it. THe slide is in better shape than I thought, the frame is more tarnished but still cleaned up okay. THe MS housing and the grip safety are pretty worn and the big old extended thumb safety needs to be changed to something more normal but here it is:

let me know if you can tell the difference after cleaning.

Poor Jeff :( !
I miss your picture, big guy........ :(
On a brighter note;
You did an excellent job of cleaning up your pistol. As others have commented, both here and in other threads, the satin nickel finish is one of the most distinctive ever devised. I think that you have done an outstanding job of bringing yours back to its original state. I envy you, and congratulate you, not only for your Commander, but for your cleaning job, as well.

Anything that gets used regularly will get dinged. You want to use it not leave it home.

I finally got a chance to shoot the Nickel Commander yesterday. I shot 9 - 7 rd mags through it and it shoots like a dream! :) No failures whatsoever and it shoots straight as an arrow at 10 yards (fading light, not much time). There's something about shooting the short .45's that I just love! My 3 Comanders, my OM and my Springer loaded Compact are by far my favorites to shoot. Can't wait to shoot again....may have a chance on Monday.

Congrats on a nice pistol. I bought one new in 78 and traded it in on a little Detonics in 84 because I noticed it did show wear quick. (Still have the Detonics).

For what it is worth all the ones I saw in the 70's had wood grips. Mine had checkered ones with gold Colt medallions as on the Gold Cup I still have I bought new in 77.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e193/dakota1911/1911GoldCup_r.jpg

Although rare, I did see some with smooth wood grips and silver Colt medallions.

Mine also had silver screws on the grips, and I think the sights on this one are not quite original, but I am not 100% sure.

jeff1124
22nd October 2006, 07:54
The grip screws on mine are very tarnished so I couldn't say whether they were nickel plated or silver. I guess I'll put a couple of stainless pieces on her to keep her looking okay and save the originals for when I can get her either re-nickeled or, perhaps, hard chromed.

Nice Colt Jeff, I don’t see very much rust on the gun so the original finish appears to be providing protection for the most part.
If you were to refinish the pistol I’m thinking satin hard chrome would be off the hook. Or maybe see if the custom shop at Colt could do a nice royal blue finish
Either way it’s a very nice Commander
Best of Luck with your “new” Colt
