Hey folks,

Saw a Colt (in the box with original paperwork) Combat Commander in 9mm... s/n CLW 015xxx

appeared to be about 90-95% (slight scratch near the slide stop)..

asking price was $400.00..

How does this sound? 9mm are not as popular as 45's.... but does that make them "rare" or just not popular or desirable?

Any problems with a lightweight frame? (Won't be carried, just shot from time to time.)

Thanks!

To me it sounds like a good deal, where was it again? :p ;)

digi-shots,
Are you certain about that Combat Commander designation on the Colt 9mm that you looked at? I'm not trying to be difficult, but my understanding is that the "Combat" Commanders are the all-steel versions of that breed.

Steve...

You are so right.... we were just now having that same discussion here after
searching online about the various models...

I am not 100% positive... but I did write down Combat Commander Model and the serial number on the paperwork was CLW015226.... I glanced at the serial numbers on the gun and verified the last 5 numbers which were 15226.

The only conclusion we're coming up with now is that the slide & frame don't match...

A phone call back to the shop is in order... will let you know shortly.

I have NO idea where I got the Combat from....

the slide reads: Commander Model (and not Combat Commander Model)...

Sorry but any Colt that's in decent shape and can be had for under $600 is a buy. What are you waiting for I would have bought it right there on the spot.... ;)

I'm not in the market for amother 1911 right now, and I really am not looking for a 9mm, but I can assure you that for $400, a Colt 1911, even in 9mm, I'd be posting pics of my new treasure.

Yes, go back and get that pistol before it disappears on you.

Hey guys...

Thanks so much for all your imput.

I called the shop back.... and confirmed that it is a Colt Commander Model and not a "Combat".

Lucky for me... they were closing in 10 minutes so I had them put it aside for me. I'll be going back first thing Monday morning. It's really a good looking gun even though it's "only a 9mm". The brown woodgrain box is in ok condition (not excellent) but it did have 3 or 4 sheets of paper in it (warranty, etc.). The gun doesn't look like it's been shot much.. and does not show any sign of being carried.

I'm not sure why I didn't buy it on the spot... :butthead:
I thought it was a good deal but just wanted to come home and check it out here online.

The folks at the shop are pretty good people... same place I bought a very nice S&W .38 US Navy marked revolver about 5 weeks ago.

Will be posting some pics on Monday.

Thanks,
Linda

No need to beat yourself up over not buying it "on the spot". Four hundred dollars is still $400, and I don't blame you for wanting to get some feed-back on the possible purchase.

It's good that they set it back for you, and we all look forward to seeing some photographs and reading a range report, when you get it home.

Congratulations! :D

You have done well, grasshopper! :)

Hey thanks!

One reason was that it was "just a 9mm".... and really didn't need another 9mm..... but, it was a "Colt" and a good looking one at that.

Are the 9mm versions uncommon or just not as desirable as the .45's ?

Wouldn't mind finding a "38-Super"... maybe next time!

Been doing a little more reading on the forums...

When I go to get it on Monday, I'll be sure to check the feed ramp to make sure it hasn't been polished (and annodized finish removed!). Also check for cracks on the slide (didn't see any today... but will look very closely).

I paid over $500 (plus shipping and transfer fees) for a 9mm Combat Commander about a year ago, and then I had to spend some more to get it running. And although it looked very nice, it had been refinished (which I knew when I bought it). $400 for the gun you described isn't a bargain ... it's a steal.

And I will leave you with one bit of advice: Don't shoot it. If you do ... you will fall in love with it. That 9mm Commander of mine is one of the sweetest shooting guns I've ever pointed down-range. Great balance (although an alloy frame may balance differently), light recoil, 1911 ... what's not to love?

See, now it will be your 9mm of choice and the others will be relegated to "safe" duty!! ;) :)
